In June 2026<\/a>, the oldest bridge in Paris will undergo a spectacular metamorphosis. Artist JR will unveil the Caverne du Pont Neuf<\/strong>, a monumental installation that promises to redefine the way we look at this iconic site. This ephemeral work promises to be the major artistic event of the Paris summer. <\/p>\n

JR transforms the Pont Neuf into a giant cave<\/h2>\n

French artist JR, renowned for his large-scale<\/a> photographic collages, is back with a project of unprecedented ambition. This time, it’s no longer a question of pasting images on walls. He will literally wrap the Pont Neuf in an impressive textile structure. <\/p>\n

The Caverne du Pont Neuf<\/strong> will cover an area of 2,400 m\u00b2<\/strong>. Visitors will be able to walk under a vault 120 metres long<\/strong> and 18 metres high<\/strong>. As a result, the experience promises to be immersive<\/a> and gripping. <\/p>\n

The installation is based on 80 textile arches<\/strong>, creating the illusion of a natural grotto. What’s more, the whole thing will weigh just 5 tonnes<\/strong> and contain around 20,000 m\u00b3 of air<\/strong>. The technical lightness contrasts with the massive visual impact of the work<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A technical challenge on a historic monument<\/h3>\n

Installing such a structure on the oldest bridge in Paris is a real challenge. The Pont Neuf, completed in 1607, remains a listed monument requiring strict precautions. However, JR and his teams have designed a system that respects the integrity of the heritage. <\/p>\n

The Amicale des Ponts de Paris supports this ambitious project. At the same time, Galerie Perrotin is supporting the artist in this adventure. These partners ensure the technical and logistical feasibility of the project. <\/p>\n

    Tourists on the bateau-mouche will also benefit from a unique viewpoint. From the Seine, the textile structure will reveal a mysterious, organic silhouette. Indeed, the work has been designed to be viewed from several angles. <\/p>\n

    Local residents, tourists and the curious will meet under these monumental arches. This social mix is part of the artistic project. JR seeks to create moments of sharing around his work. <\/p>\n

    To take full advantage of the installation, we recommend coming early in the morning or in the evening. Natural light will transform the interior atmosphere as the hours pass. In this way, each visit will offer a different atmosphere. <\/p>\n

    JR’s artistic career in Paris<\/h3>\n

    This isn’t the first time JR has invested Parisian monuments. In 2016, he made the Louvre pyramid disappear thanks to a trompe-l’\u0153il photograph. His work always combines visual art, architecture and social commitment. <\/p>\n

    However, La Caverne du Pont Neuf<\/strong> marks an evolution in his practice. Here, he moves from flat surfaces to monumental sculpture. In so doing, he explores new creative territories while remaining faithful to his popular approach. <\/p>\n

    The French artist has gained worldwide renown for his projects in Brazilian favelas and on the wall between Israel and Palestine. His Oscar for Best Documentary for Visages Villages<\/em> reinforced his reputation. Now he returns to Paris with a work that could become iconic. <\/p>\n

    Practical information for visiting the plant<\/h2>\n

    La Caverne du Pont Neuf will be open for viewing in June 2026<\/strong>. Exact opening and closing dates will be announced shortly. We recommend you follow the official announcements. <\/p>\n

    Access is either directly from the banks of the Seine or via the bridge itself. Reservations are not required to cross the bridge. However, guided tours may be offered for those wishing to explore the work in greater depth. <\/p>\n
