Yet four dermatologists interviewed by the Parade<\/em> media converge on a single recommendation to combat aging skin<\/strong>. Their verdict is clear: the essential gesture doesn’t cost a fortune and can already be found in most Parisian pharmacies. <\/p>\n

Sun protection, a bulwark against skin ageing<\/h2>\n

Neglecting sunscreen<\/a> is, according to experts, the number one factor in premature skin aging<\/strong>. Dr Whitney Hovenic, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, sees this daily in her consultations. UV rays progressively degrade collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its firmness and elasticity. <\/p>\n

What makes sun<\/a> damage particularly insidious is its short-term imperceptibility. You don’t wake up wrinkled after a day without protection. Destruction is measured in decades and accumulates silently. <\/p>\n

Dr. Brendan Camp confirms: even short daily exposures without protection can accumulate and make the skin look older than the person’s actual age. So it’s incidental, everyday exposure that does the most damage, far more than summer tanning<\/a>. <\/p>\n

“Even on overcast days or when we’re mainly indoors, UVA rays can penetrate windows and contribute to cumulative skin damage.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Preconceived ideas about UV<\/h3>\n

Clouds are no protection whatsoever, warns Dr. Hovenic. UVA rays easily penetrate gray Parisian skies and even the windows of your office or apartment. So exposure isn’t limited to sunny terraces. <\/p>\n

Dr Nicole Lee, founder of Epoch Dermatology, points out that daily commutes, walks and light filtered through the window all contribute to skin aging<\/strong>. As for UV cabins, Dr Chang Son concludes that they only multiply these same risks. <\/p>\n

    Your skin’s other enemies<\/h2>\n

    Sun protection remains the central pillar, but several other behaviors accelerate skin aging<\/strong>. Smoking tops the list: it restricts blood flow to the skin and introduces oxidative stress that damages collagen and elastin, according to Dr. Camp. <\/p>\n

    Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, results in dullness, swelling and accelerated collagen degradation. The body doesn’t have time to repair itself properly at night,” explains Dr. Hovenic. What’s more, this cumulative deficit visibly alters the complexion’s radiance. <\/p>\n

    Dr Lee introduces a little-known concept: inflammaging<\/strong>, chronic low-grade inflammation that accelerates cellular aging. Over-exfoliation, smoking, lack of sleep and poor diet all contribute to this phenomenon. Every gesture counts when it comes to preserving our youthful appearance. <\/p>\n

    Nutrition and hydration<\/h3>\n

    The impact of glycation should not be underestimated. A diet rich in sugars and processed foods weakens collagen fibers,” says Dr. Camp. In addition, repeated facial expressions, such as frowning, can deepen expression lines over time. <\/p>\n

    Not moisturizing your skin on a regular basis is not harmless either. Dehydrated skin accentuates fine lines and loses the healthy, plump look that gives skin its fresh, youthful appearance,” insists Dr. Hovenic. <\/p>\n

    Acting on extrinsic aging<\/h2>\n

    The four specialists distinguish two types of skin aging<\/strong>: intrinsic, genetically programmed and inevitable, and extrinsic, triggered by environmental factors over which we have control. There’s not much we can do to act directly on intrinsic factors,” admits Dr Son. <\/p>\n

    Yet extrinsic aging is largely in our own hands. The basic routine is simple: daily sun cream, gentle cleanser and moisturizer. However, this minimal routine can be enriched for optimum results. <\/p>\n

    Dr. Hovenic strongly recommends adding a retinoid in the evening, one of the best-studied ingredients for stimulating collagen production and supporting healthy cell renewal. In addition, vitamin C in the morning helps neutralize free radical damage, according to Dr. Camp. <\/p>\n

    In addition, professional treatments such as laser resurfacing can boost results.
