Bubble tea<\/strong> has been seducing trend<\/a> drinkers for several years now. However, a recent American survey has raised questions about the presence of lead in this popular beverage. This information deserves particular attention, especially if you regularly consume this Taiwanese beverage. <\/p>\n

Investigation reveals traces of lead in bubble tea<\/h2>\n

Born in Taiwan in the 1980s, bubble tea has become an extremely popular drink. Made from green or black tea and garnished with tapioca pearls<\/a> or fruit, it is now very popular on social networks. However, its consumption is not without consequences. <\/p>\n

An investigation published on the Consumer Reports website on September 16, 2025<\/strong> revealed that some bubble teas may contain worrying levels of lead. The American<\/a> non-profit organization has thus brought to light a problem previously unknown to the general public. <\/p>\n

Contamination levels deemed moderate<\/h3>\n

In its investigation, the Consumer Reports team tested four different products<\/a><\/strong>. Of these, three showed traces of lead. These levels were judged to be moderate and below the organization’s threshold of concern. <\/p>\n

“Lead is naturally present in the earth’s crust. Our soils around the world are contaminated with it, and we are exposed to small amounts of lead through our food, our water and even the dust in our homes.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This explanation comes from Sana Mujahid, a doctor of science who regularly collaborates with Consumer Reports, in an article published on April 7, 2026 on the Very Well Health website. The lead detected could come from tea, water or tapioca pearls. <\/p>\n

The health effects of lead: what you need to know<\/h2>\n

This contamination is not unique to bubble tea. It affects many everyday foods. However, no amount of lead is harmless to the body. <\/p>\n

Adult exposure can affect several body systems. The nervous system, joints, muscles, memory and reproductive health can all be affected. Consequences vary according to the level and duration of exposure. <\/p>\n

    Young children and pregnant women are at greater risk. Exposure to lead can impair brain development. These categories of the population must therefore be vigilant. <\/p>\n

    Sana Mujahid provides further information for those at risk. She advises strictly limiting consumption of this beverage. This is all the more true as we are exposed to lead from many other sources in our daily lives. <\/p>\n

    Other reasons to moderate consumption<\/h2>\n

    Lead exposure isn’t the only reason to reconsider your bubble tea consumption. A study published in 2022<\/strong> in the Journal of Affective Disorders revealed a link between this beverage and anxiety. Frequent consumption was associated with an increased risk of anxiety disorders. <\/p>\n

    This drink is also rich in added sugars. This increases the risk of developing heart disease. Type 2 diabetes is another risk associated with excessive consumption. <\/p>\n

    So you can continue to enjoy this trendy drink. Occasional consumption presents no major danger for most healthy adults. However, moderation remains the key to enjoying this pleasure without compromising your well-being. <\/p>\n
