Since Monday May 11, the oldest bridge in Paris has been home to a monumental installation by artist JR. This artistic creation transforms the monument into an immense open-air cave, but also imposes a complete closure for several weeks.  <\/p>\n<h2>Pont Neuf transforms into a giant grotto<\/h2>\n<p>Announced in December 2024, this ambitious project is finally coming to fruition. JR, a street-artist renowned for his oversized collages around the world, has chosen to dress the Pont Neuf in an unprecedented way. Called <strong>La Caverne du Pont Neuf<\/strong>, the work features an immense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/05\/13\/these-5-unusual-experiences-to-be-enjoyed-free-of-charge-during-nuit-des-musees-2026-in-paris\/\">immersive grotto<\/a>, with optical illusions, inflatable structures and light effects.  <\/p>\n<p>Initially scheduled for September 2025, the project has been delayed. The installation finally got underway on Monday, May 11, and is expected to last a few weeks. In practice, this creation will stretch from one bank of the Seine to the other, offering passers-by a striking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/05\/12\/this-house-covered-with-15-tons-of-mosaic-was-built-by-one-man-over-a-period-of-33-years\/\">visual experience<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The work will be open to the public free of charge from June 6 to 28, 2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>A tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude<\/h3>\n<p>This project pays tribute to a historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/05\/11\/andy-warhol-exhibition-at-saint-laurent-rive-droite-turns-paris-boutique-into-pop-art-gallery\/\">artistic<\/a> intervention. In 1985, artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the Pont Neuf in over <strong>41,800 meters of fabric<\/strong>. To maintain this installation, they used 13 kilometers of rope and no less than 12 tons of steel.  <\/p>\n<p>This monumental masterpiece attracted some three million Parisians and tourists over a two-week period. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of this major artistic event. JR offers his own vision by wrapping one of Paris&#8217;s most famous bridges.  <\/p>\n<h2>An immersive experience with Thomas Bangalter<\/h2>\n<p>La Caverne du Pont Neuf is more than just a gigantic optical illusion. The installation also includes a soundscape imagined by <strong>Thomas Bangalter<\/strong>, one half of Daft Punk. This musical dimension enriches the visitor experience.  <\/p>\n<p>In concrete terms, the work will be <strong>100% free and accessible to all<\/strong>. Parisians and tourists alike will be able to discover it from June 6 to 28. This closure concerns pedestrians, cyclists and motorists for the duration of the installation. Clearly, you&#8217;ll need to plan alternative routes if you normally use this bridge.  <\/p>\n<p>For motorists, the ban will last for the life of the work, until <strong>June 28<\/strong>. Dismantling may extend this closure period. This situation is likely to disrupt the movements of many local residents.  <\/p>\n<h3>Pont des Arts also concerned<\/h3>\n<p>Traffic in central Paris is further complicated by the simultaneous closure of the Pont des Arts. These two closures are forcing users to adapt their daily journeys. From now on, residents and workers in the area will have to plan ahead.  <\/p>\n<p>If you live in the area, you&#8217;ll need to be resourceful during this period. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the nearby bridges to cross the Seine.
