The first traces of celebrations dedicated to mothers date back to ancient times. The Greeks paid homage to Rhea, mother of the gods, at spring festivals celebrating fertility and motherhood. Over the centuries, this tradition evolved. In England, as early as the 17th century, Mothering Sunday<\/em> appeared, a day on which children, often employed far from home, were invited to meet their mothers. But it was in the early 20th century that Mother’s Day really took on its modern form. In the United States, a woman named Anna Jarvis campaigned for the introduction of a national day to honor mothers. Her commitment bore fruit. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially established Mother’s<\/em> Day on the second Sunday in May. <\/p>\n\n

Making it official in France<\/h2>\n\n

In France, Mother’s Day gradually took hold after the First World War. At the time, it was a way of valuing families and supporting the birth rate. It wasn’t until 1950 that it became an official celebration in the French calendar. <\/p>\n\n
