For a long time, the Seine kept its secrets hidden from swimmers. Yet this summer<\/a>, the swim across Paris<\/strong> is making a comeback in a form that no one has seen in more than eight decades. The event, taking place on July 11 and 12, 2026<\/strong>, promises to make sports history in the capital. <\/p>\n

A competition that began in 1905 and was discontinued in 1944<\/h2>\n

It all began with the newspaper L’Auto<\/strong>, which had already launched the Tour de France. In 1905<\/strong>, it organized the first major swim across Paris, covering an 11-kilometer<\/strong> route from the Pont National in the 13th arrondissement to the Auteuil Viaduct\u2014now known as the Pont du Garigliano\u2014in the 16th arrondissement. The event drew huge crowds and became a popular fixture of the Parisian summer<\/a>. <\/p>\n

However, two factors sounded the death knell for the race. First, the gradual deterioration of the Seine\u2019s<\/a> water quality. Second, the rapid growth of river traffic made the river increasingly impassable. In 1944<\/strong>, the race through Paris came to a definitive end. <\/p>\n

The following decades saw several attempts to revive the event. Between 1966 and 1992<\/strong>, an annual race<\/a> was held, but participants wore wetsuits and used fins\u2014a far cry from the original spirit of the event. In 2012<\/strong>, the swim was banned due to poor water quality. In 2025<\/strong>, the Open Swim Harmonie Mutuelle faced the same restrictions. <\/p>\n

2026: The Historic Return of the Grand Tour<\/h3>\n

This year, the Harmonie Mutuelle Open Swim has finally achieved a milestone that no one had managed to reach since the war. For the first time since 1944, swimmers are once again taking on the historic route of the Paris swim crossing. This is its 12th edition<\/strong> and, without a doubt, the most eagerly anticipated. <\/p>\n

The flagship event covers 8.5 km<\/strong> in the Seine, from the Port de la Gare in the 13th arrondissement<\/strong> to the Quai de Grenelle in the 15th arrondissement<\/strong>. The time limit is set at 2 hours and 30 minutes<\/strong>. This course is therefore intended for excellent swimmers, as registration requires proof of a very high level of open-water swimming ability. <\/p>\n

A program designed for all skill levels<\/h2>\n

The Harmonie Mutuelle Open Swim isn’t just about swimming across Paris. In fact, the event features six different races<\/strong> to accommodate both beginner and experienced swimmers. This way, everyone can find a challenge that suits them, without feeling left out of the fun. <\/p>\n

    Prices also vary depending on the chosen course. Registration starts at \u20ac20<\/strong> for the 500-meter race and goes up to \u20ac90<\/strong> for the 8.5-kilometer swim across Paris. The event is organized by passionate swimmers who, above all, want to share their love of open-water swimming. <\/p>\n

    Two days, two venues, two atmospheres<\/h3>\n

    The program is spread over two distinct days. On Saturday, July 11, 2026<\/strong>, the 500-meter, 5-kilometer, and 4 x 500-meter relay events will take place on the Ourcq Canal<\/strong>. This setting offers calmer waters and a festive atmosphere. <\/p>\n
