Staying in Paris during August is often a choice made by default. Yet this time of year holds pleasures that no other month can offer. Quieter streets, accessible museums<\/a>, and free events<\/a> make this summer one not to be missed.<\/p>\n

Paris Plages turns 20: an edition you won’t want to skip<\/h2>\n

This August in Paris<\/a>, Paris Plages celebrates its 20th edition<\/strong> with a packed, entirely free programme. Swimming in the Seine, sports classes, open-air exhibitions, children’s activities, water sports, first-aid courses: choosing will be the hardest part. The event runs from 4 July to 30 August 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So even without leaving the capital<\/a>, you can enjoy a genuine holiday feeling. The riverbanks are transformed, and the city takes on a face that few Parisians truly know.<\/p>\n

Museums you can finally breathe in<\/h3>\n

Another perk of August in Paris is how much easier it is to visit the great landmarks. The Ch\u00e2teau de Versailles, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre can all be explored without queuing. On top of that, exhibitions such as Hilma af Klint at the Grand Palais, the 400th anniversary of the H\u00f4tel de la Marine, and Camille Vivier at the MEP are all there to enjoy without weaving through crowds.<\/p>\n

Water skiing on the Seine, whatever your level, it’s an activity few people associate with August in Paris. The Ski Nautique Club de Paris<\/strong>, located at 1, all\u00e9e du Bord de l’Eau, opens its doors at weekends from 2pm to 6pm<\/strong>. Other water sports are accessible just a few RER stops away: wakeboarding, rafting, canoeing, surfing.<\/p>\n

What’s more, as Parisians leave the city, the Canal Saint-Martin and the city’s swimming pools empty out. You can swim without the aquatic traffic jams of June. It’s a rare freedom, one worth seizing without delay.<\/p>\n

The city clears out on public transport too. In August, the nightmare of line 13 at 9am is a distant memory. You find yourself sitting down on every journey and discovering a certain charm in the Paris M\u00e9tro.<\/p>\n

It’s also a chance to see Paris from a completely different angle.<\/p>\n

    Nightlife benefits from the summer too. In August, the queues outside clubs simply vanish. There are fewer people inside, leaving more room to dance and sparing you the ordeal of overheating.<\/p>\n

    Open-air cinema, festivals, and sunsets<\/h2>\n

    August in Paris is also shaped by music and open-air cinema. La Villette hosts free screenings from 22 July to 16 August 2026<\/strong>, at 211, avenue Jean Jaur\u00e8s in the 19th arrondissement. You can settle into the grass or a deckchair to revisit a classic or discover something new.<\/p>\n

    On the music front, the Parc Floral festivals welcome Classique au vert and the Paris Jazz Festival from 24 June to 6 September 2026<\/strong>, free of charge. Rock en Seine takes place from 26 to 30 August 2026<\/strong> at the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud. L’\u00c9t\u00e9 du canal offers open-air DJ sets from 27 June to 9 August 2026<\/strong>, also free.<\/p>\n

    Finally, the clear summer skies deliver the most beautiful sunsets of the year. During August in Paris, you can catch them from the butte Montmartre, the city’s gardens, rooftops, or the tracks of the Petite Ceinture, without the usual crowds. The best spots are free, the photos unbothered by strangers’ faces: it’s a version of Paris that few people are lucky enough to see.<\/p>\n

    Spending August in Paris means experiencing the capital in an entirely different way. The streets are no longer heaving, nobody is in a rush, and the shops that are usually packed are finally pleasant to browse.
