Touching up your foundation<\/strong> in the heat<\/a> feels like second nature. Yet that reflex can lead to a thick, cakey result that makeup artists simply call the “cakey effect.” One small step beforehand makes all the difference.<\/p>\n

Why foundation seems to disappear in the heat<\/h2>\n

When we sweat, the skin<\/a> produces more sebum. As a result, areas of the face that looked perfectly even in the morning seem to lose their coverage as the hours go by. It’s tempting to assume the makeup has simply vanished, but that would be a mistake.<\/p>\n

Makeup artist Emily Wood, speaking to Vogue UK, also confirms that “powder is the main culprit when skin starts to look cakey and uneven.” While applying a little powder underneath your foundation can help it last in warm weather, the build-up remains a real risk.<\/p>\n

The right move before any touch-up: absorb the sebum<\/h2>\n

The correct approach is to start by absorbing excess sebum, with a tissue or a blotting paper. This simple step prevents unsightly lines of demarcation when you go in for a touch-up.<\/p>\n

    Make-up artist Suzy Gerstein, on the other hand, recommends resisting the urge to blot away every last bit of shine. She advises keeping a natural glow on the bridge of the nose and the high points of the cheeks so the skin retains a fresh, natural appearance.<\/p>\n

    Touching up your complexion in a targeted way after blotting<\/h2>\n

    Once excess sebum has been absorbed, a foundation<\/strong> touch-up is entirely possible. The rule is to correct locally, only where coverage has faded, patting rather than dragging to deposit the tiniest amount of product.<\/p>\n

    If you’re at home, you can also mist a fine layer of hydrating spray first, then gently pat with a clean makeup sponge. According to makeup artist Kasey Spickard, speaking to Vogue, “refreshing the face reactivates the makeup and allows for an even application.”<\/p>\n
