On the weekend of 19 and 20 September 2026<\/strong>, Saint-Germain-en-Laye throws open its doors for the 2026 European Heritage Days<\/strong><\/a>. The royal city in the Yvelines offers a packed programme, free for most activities, spanning guided tours, art workshops and concerts.<\/p>\n

A city steeped in history for the 2026 European Heritage Days<\/h2>\n

Saint-Germain-en-Laye traces its origins to the 11th century, when a monastery dedicated to Saint Germain, Bishop of Paris<\/a>, was built on its wooded lands. In the 12th century, under the reign of Louis VI, a fortified castle followed. It was Louis XIV who transformed it into a royal residence<\/a> in the 17th century, commissioning Andr\u00e9 Le N\u00f4tre to design a magnificent park.<\/p>\n

Today, the ch\u00e2teau houses the Mus\u00e9e d’Arch\u00e9ologie Nationale. The city also inspired artists such as Debussy and Renoir. This living heritage provides the perfect backdrop for these European open days<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unusual venues and traditional crafts to discover<\/h2>\n

Among the highlights, several craftspeople’s studios open their doors free of charge. The Atelier Val\u00e9rie Malfay offers a demonstration of the papier bord\u00e9 technique, on Saturday 19 September from 10am to 1pm and from 2:30pm to 6:30pm<\/strong>, as well as Sunday morning. The sculpture studio of Mich\u00e8le Savinel explains clay modelling, mould-making and bronze casting on Saturday from 10:30am to 6:30pm.<\/p>\n

The Atelier Carole Mayans invites visitors on a journey through the history of lacemaking, a craft 500 years in the making, inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010. Entry is free and open all day Saturday from 10am to 7pm. Meanwhile, JP Manufacture showcases the work of a decorative upholsterer, with a focus on handcraft and bespoke pieces.<\/p>\n

    Museums, chapels and a cemetery: the built heritage takes centre stage<\/h2>\n

    The Maison natale Claude-Debussy, listed as a Monument Historique in 1972, opens free of charge both days from 10:30am to 12:30pm and from 2pm to 6pm. A concert-reading entitled “Colette et la musique” is scheduled for Saturday evening from 7pm to 8pm, with reservations opening on 1 August.<\/p>\n

    The Espace Paul et Andr\u00e9 Vera presents two exhibitions: “\u00c9t\u00e9 combien je vous adore ! La belle saison chez Paul Vera” and a five-year anthology of works of the month, featuring an exceptional presentation of the painting “L’Escamoteur” attributed to the circle of Hieronymus Bosch. The Mus\u00e9e d\u00e9partemental Maurice Denis offers 45-minute flash tours of the exhibition “Maurice Denis, collectionneur”, limited to 25 people, both days from 2:30pm to 5:30pm.<\/p>\n

    The ancient cemetery, home to more than 3,000 graves<\/strong> across over 2 hectares, offers a guided tour each day from 2pm to 3pm, limited to 15 people and requiring a reservation. The Chapelle des Franciscaines, rich in heritage connected to Maurice Denis and the Vera brothers, welcomes visitors freely both afternoons from 2pm to 6pm.<\/p>\n

    Cultural events and talks for all audiences<\/h2>\n

    The M\u00e9diath\u00e8que Marc Ferro hosts an exhibition on the romantic ch\u00e2teaux of Monte-Cristo and Saint-L\u00e9ger, running from 1 to 26 September. A talk entitled “Patrimoines en r\u00e9sistance, de Tombouctou \u00e0 Odessa” is scheduled for Saturday from 3pm to 4pm, with reservation required.<\/p>\n

    At the Micro-Folie, a treasure hunt through the Bel-Air eco-district is on offer Saturday morning for ages 7 and up, with reservation. In the afternoon, a musical and theatrical walkabout with the Compagnie Trottoir Express and the Megafaune brass band sets off from the place des Rotondes. A 3D-printing workshop recreating the rotonde is also on the programme from 3pm to 5pm.<\/p>\n

    La CLEF organises a musical flea market on Saturday from 2pm to 6pm, open to all music lovers looking to buy or sell instruments and vinyl records.
