Imagine a property where the air smells of jasmine, iris and lavender from the very first step through the gate. That is precisely what you experience today at La Pausa, the Riviera<\/a> estate that Gabrielle Chanel had built in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in the late 1920s. Coco Chanel’s Riviera gardens, painstakingly restored by American architect Peter Marino, have finally reclaimed the spare, wild character their creator always intended.<\/p>\n

An estate built on the success of N\u00b05<\/h2>\n

In 1928, Gabrielle Chanel acquired this 10-acre<\/strong> property<\/a> overlooking the Mediterranean. The money came from the profits of N\u00b05, launched seven years earlier, and from her revolutionary couture. It is no coincidence, then, that two of the three plants greeting visitors at the entrance, jasmine and iris, are among the key ingredients of that iconic fragrance.<\/p>\n

To design the house, Chanel partnered with architect Robert Streitz. Together they drew inspiration from the austere convent of Aubazine where she had grown up. The name chosen, La Pausa, meaning “the pause”, most likely refers to a 15th-century chapel<\/a> adjoining the grounds. Local tradition holds that Mary Magdalene rested there in the shade of Roquebrune’s olive trees during her journey to Marseille after the Crucifixion.<\/p>\n

Chanel sold the property in 1953<\/strong> to publisher Emery Reves, shortly before reopening her couture house<\/a> after a hiatus of nearly fifteen years brought on by the Second World War. In 2015<\/strong>, the house of Chanel bought La Pausa back from the Reves heirs, with the ambition of turning it into a space for artistic residencies and creative inspiration.<\/p>\n

Peter Marino and the philosophy behind Coco Chanel’s Riviera gardens<\/h2>\n

To lead the restoration, Chanel turned to Peter Marino, who has collaborated with the brand for four decades<\/strong>. His reference point for the landscape was the year 1935<\/strong>, the moment when the gardens had truly taken the shape Chanel envisioned. Marino explains that the spirit of the 1930s, shaped by economic hardship, demanded a certain restraint, far removed from any ostentatious display.<\/p>\n

To recover that modernist, stripped-back ideal, Marino removed later decorative additions and uprooted recent plantings, including palm trees and other non-native species that had taken over the grounds. This process of editing reopened views towards Menton to the east and Monaco to the west, two panoramas that the encroaching vegetation had long obscured.<\/p>\n

Within Coco Chanel’s Riviera gardens, Marino then planted broad sweeps of lavender and iris in flat planes of colour, drawing, in his own words, on the painter Kandinsky. On the front slope, lavender cascades down towards the entrance drive using the French technique known as the “coul\u00e9e.” The lawns, meanwhile, are left to grow freely, a mix of grass and clover, giving the whole a texture he likens to the signature tweeds of Chanel fashion.<\/p>\n

The olive trees, guardians of the estate<\/h2>\n

From the very start of construction in 1928 and 1929, Chanel had asked Streitz to preserve two ancient olive trees. The first stood directly in the middle of the entrance drive, and she flatly refused to have it moved. The second became the heart of a cloister-style inner courtyard: the house was literally built around it.<\/p>\n

The estate is home today to 250 ancient olive trees<\/strong>, the oldest of which is estimated to be 800 years old<\/strong>. Marino has repositioned some of them to more considered spots, including the one in the entrance drive that Chanel called “my guardian.” To show them off at night, he ran cables up from the ground and fixed small LED spotlights onto the branches, angled downward. The effect mimics moonlight even on overcast evenings, casting shifting patterns across the ground below.<\/p>\n

    A living place, between heritage and contemporary creation<\/h2>\n

    La Pausa remains a private property, but it opens its doors for occasional Chanel events, such as last May’s haute joaillerie presentation. The estate also hosts artists’ residencies: the first, in autumn 2025, was dedicated to writers; the next, planned for next summer, will welcome composers, with a concert whose music will drift out across the gardens.<\/p>\n

    The connection between music and La Pausa is nothing new. In Chanel’s day, Erik Satie, Georges Auric and Misia Sert were already playing there. Matthieu Blazy, Chanel’s artistic director, chose this setting to photograph the campaign for his first ready-to-wear collection, with models climbing the cloister olive tree, just as Mademoiselle herself used to do nearly a century ago.<\/p>\n

    Coco Chanel’s Riviera gardens thus carry a double memory: that of a woman who built around trees rather than cutting them down, and that of a place where creativity continues to find its footing, among lavender, olive trees and Mediterranean light.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
