This annual event didn’t come about by chance. Since 2010<\/strong>, 19 August has commemorated the presentation of the daguerreotype by Louis Daguerre<\/strong> before the Institut de France on 19 August 1839<\/strong>. That revolutionary process changed the worlds of art, technology and information forever. Photography is, at its roots, a French invention, which makes celebrating this day in Paris<\/a> feel entirely natural.<\/p>\n

To mark the anniversary, visitors have two very concrete options. The first: head out into the streets of the capital<\/a>, camera in hand, to capture moments of life and the landscapes Paris has to offer. The second, and this is where the 2026 programme really shines, is to make a beeline for the city’s museums and art galleries to admire the work of photographers past and present.<\/p>\n

Free exhibitions to catch on this photography day<\/h2>\n

This year’s World Photography Day<\/strong> falls at just the right moment, with several free exhibitions still open to the public. The Galerie Rouge<\/strong> is spotlighting two American fashion photographers in a show running until 19 September 2026<\/strong>. On rue de Seine, the galerie Roger-Viollet<\/strong> is presenting “Paris, ouvert la nuit”<\/strong>, a deep dive into the nocturnal life of the capital throughout the 20th century, free to visit until 3 October 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Out in the open air, the domaine de Sceaux and the parc d\u00e9partemental des Chanteraines are hosting “Deux si\u00e8cles d’images”<\/strong>, a free outdoor photography exhibition running until 18 December 2026<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the Maison de la Culture du Japon<\/strong> is presenting “Sumo, forces sacr\u00e9es”<\/strong> free of charge, a photographic installation by Bruno Aveillan<\/strong> devoted to this ancient martial art, until 26 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Major institutions stepping up for World Photography Day<\/h2>\n

For this 2026 edition of World Photography Day<\/strong>, Paris’s leading cultural institutions are pulling out all the stops. The Jeu de Paume<\/strong> is bringing together two complementary exhibitions: the photography collection of Elton John and David Furnish<\/strong>, titled “Fragile Beauty”<\/strong>, alongside a retrospective dedicated to Madeleine de Sin\u00e9ty<\/strong>, a photographer of everyday rural life. Both shows run until 27 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Maison Europ\u00e9enne de la Photographie<\/strong> is celebrating the history of the medium through two distinct propositions. On one hand, an original exhibition titled “La photographie en toutes lettres”<\/strong>, an artistic A-to-Z of the medium. On the other, a major retrospective devoted to Camille Vivier<\/strong>, a leading figure in contemporary French photography. Both are accessible until 13 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

  • The Cit\u00e9 de l’\u00c9conomie<\/strong> is showing “All Inclusive”<\/strong> by Kourtney Roy<\/strong>, a humorous take on the paradoxes of global tourism, until 20 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The M\u00e9morial de la Shoah<\/strong> is presenting “Simone Veil. Mes s\u0153urs et moi”<\/strong>, an intimate exhibition, free of charge until 15 October 2026<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The mus\u00e9e d\u00e9partemental Albert-Kahn<\/strong> is hosting its “Mondes en commun”<\/strong> festival dedicated to contemporary photography until 20 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Permanent venues worth knowing to extend the celebration<\/h2>\n

    Beyond the temporary exhibitions, this day is also the perfect occasion to (re)discover Paris’s venues entirely dedicated to photography. The Jeu de Paume<\/strong>, sitting at the edge of the jardin des Tuileries and the place de la Concorde, covers images from the 19th century to the present day. The Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/strong>, in the 3rd arrondissement, is an essential stop for any photography enthusiast.<\/p>\n

    The Quai de la Photo<\/strong>, a free floating art centre on the Seine near the pont de Bercy, offers 1,000 m\u00b2<\/strong> of space dedicated to exhibitions, talks and cultural events. Open to all, it is particularly well suited to a summer visit. Additionally, the Fondation Azzedine Ala\u00efa<\/strong> is presenting an exhibition at the crossroads of fashion and photography until 4 January 2027<\/strong>, featuring around fifty creations and previously unseen photographs by Peter Beard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    This celebration of World Photography Day<\/strong> also sits within a broader context: the Ministry of Culture has launched a major cultural event around the bicentenary of photography, running from 1 September 2026 to 30 September 2027<\/strong>, with numerous exhibitions across museums and art venues in Paris and the \u00cele-de-France region.
