You layer serums, essences and creams onto damp skin, convinced that the more you moisturise<\/a>, the better your complexion will be. But past the age of 40<\/a>, that logic can backfire. Ultra-layering skincare routines, popularised under the name skin flooding<\/strong>, deserve serious reconsideration as menopause approaches.<\/p>\n

What menopause really does to your skin<\/h2>\n

Before understanding why certain skincare practices become counterproductive, it helps to know what is actually happening to the skin during this period. As oestrogen levels gradually decline through perimenopause and menopause<\/a>, the skin undergoes several profound changes. First, it progressively loses its ability to retain water, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Then, collagen production drops sharply during the first years of menopause.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a 2022 study published in Scientific Reports<\/em> found lower levels of ceramides<\/strong> in menopausal women. These lipids play a direct role in keeping the skin barrier functioning properly and in limiting water loss<\/a> to the outside environment. As a result, skin concerns after 40 are not simply a matter of insufficient hydration: they affect the very structure of the skin barrier itself.<\/p>\n

Why piling on moisturising products is not enough<\/h2>\n

Skin flooding is built on an appealing idea: layering multiple humectant products onto damp skin to maximise water retention and achieve a plump, bouncy effect. This method can temporarily improve the appearance of dehydrated skin. But it does not address the real causes of skin ageing linked to hormonal changes.<\/p>\n

Hyaluronic acid, the star ingredient in these multi-step skincare routines, attracts and holds water at the surface. It remains useful. However, it cannot compensate for the lipid deficiency the skin may experience after menopause. Dermatologist Helyn Alvarez, speaking to Vogue Arabia, points out that when hydration needs are already met, adding more layers brings no additional benefit. Worse, it can encourage congestion or trigger breakouts.<\/p>\n

Dermatologist Anjali Mahto, for her part, warns against routines that have become too complex and too heavily loaded with active ingredients. This kind of protocol risks disrupting the skin barrier and triggering inflammation. What seemed like a solution can therefore become a source of fragility.<\/p>\n

Warning signs you should not ignore<\/h2>\n

Certain signals indicate that skin is reacting badly to an overloaded routine. If stinging, tightness, flaking or redness appear, reaching for a new serum in the hope of fixing things is a common mistake. These reactions often signal that the skin barrier is already under strain.<\/p>\n

In practice, this means applying one to two hydrating layers onto damp skin<\/strong>, then sealing with a moisturiser. This is the streamlined version of skin flooding recommended by dermatologist Helyn Alvarez.<\/p>\n

    The other priority is to choose formulas containing ceramides<\/strong>. These ingredients directly support the skin barrier and help limit water loss in a way that humectants alone cannot achieve. Fewer layers, then, but formulas better targeted to the real needs of skin after menopause.<\/p>\n

    Because the goal is not to give up on skincare altogether, but to understand that skin after 40 follows a different logic.
