This quietly remarkable site in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/08\/28\/galerie-colbert-reopens-after-3-years-of-restoration-the-hidden-gem-of-the-2nd-arrondissement\/\">17th arrondissement of Paris<\/a><\/strong>, so often overshadowed by P\u00e8re-Lachaise or Montparnasse, holds a roster of notable figures that is as dense as it is surprising.<\/p>\n<h2>A Parisian cemetery unlike any other<\/h2>\n<p>Founded in <strong>1833<\/strong> to serve the commune of Batignolles-Monceau, the site became part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/08\/29\/the-cour-des-comptes-opens-its-doors-for-the-2026-heritage-days\/\">Paris<\/a> when that commune was partially annexed in <strong>1860<\/strong>. Today, its <strong>roughly 11 hectares<\/strong> contain nearly <strong>15,000 graves<\/strong>, shaded by more than <strong>800 trees<\/strong>. The setting is lush and green, almost unexpectedly so for an urban space of this density.<\/p>\n<p>Since <strong>1969<\/strong>, the cimeti\u00e8re des Batignolles has had a striking architectural peculiarity: the <strong>440-metre<\/strong> viaduct of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisselectbook.com\/en\/2026\/08\/28\/paris-la-defense-is-hosting-the-burger-festival-that-will-crown-the-best-in-europe-2026\/\">boulevard p\u00e9riph\u00e9rique<\/a> passes directly over part of the site. This infrastructure has had very real consequences for certain graves. The tomb of <strong>Paul Verlaine<\/strong>, originally located in the 20th division, was relocated in <strong>1989<\/strong> to the 11th division, near the central roundabout, due to the disruption caused by the motorway overhead.<\/p>\n<h2>Surrealists, painters and poets: the great figures of the cimeti\u00e8re des Batignolles<\/h2>\n<p>Verlaine rests in the family vault alongside his parents and his son Georges. His presence here alone is reason enough to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, in the 31st division, two pillars of the Surrealist movement lie just a few graves apart. <strong>Andr\u00e9 Breton<\/strong>, author of <em>Nadja<\/em> and the <em>Manifeste du surr\u00e9alisme<\/em>, is buried here; his tombstone bears the inscription &#8220;Je cherche l&#8217;or du temps&#8221; (&#8220;I seek the gold of time&#8221;). <strong>Benjamin P\u00e9ret<\/strong>, Surrealist poet and Breton&#8217;s close companion, rests in the same division. Their proximity in death feels like a quiet extension of a lifetime of intellectual and artistic kinship.<\/p>\n<p>The 26th division is home to <strong>\u00c9douard Vuillard<\/strong>, painter and printmaker born in <strong>1868<\/strong> and a central figure of the Nabis movement. In the 25th division, two great names associated with the Ballets Russes are buried side by side: <strong>L\u00e9on Bakst<\/strong>, painter and set designer, and <strong>Alexandre Benois<\/strong>, Russian painter and decorator. Stage director <strong>Andr\u00e9 Barsacq<\/strong>, former head of the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l&#8217;Atelier, also rests in this division.<\/p>\n<h2>Pioneers and trailblazing personalities<\/h2>\n<p>The cimeti\u00e8re des Batignolles also holds some wonderful discoveries for anyone interested in women&#8217;s history. <strong>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Dutrieu<\/strong>, buried in the 2nd division, was a pioneer on multiple fronts: cycling champion, motorcyclist, racing driver, and the first Belgian woman to earn a pilot&#8217;s licence. <strong>Marguerite Durand<\/strong>, in the 10th division, left her mark on French feminism by founding <em>La Fronde<\/em>, a feminist newspaper, and establishing herself as an indispensable figure in that struggle.<\/p>\n<p>The 1st division is home to <strong>\u00c9milienne d&#8217;Alen\u00e7on<\/strong>, cabaret dancer and actress who became an icon of Belle \u00c9poque Paris. Russian singer <strong>Fyodor Chaliapin<\/strong>, who was buried at Batignolles, was transferred to Moscow in <strong>1984<\/strong>. A cenotaph remains in the 25th division as a memorial to his former presence.<\/p>\n<p>Several other figures are worth noting to complete the picture. <strong>Gaston Calmette<\/strong>, editor of <em>Le Figaro<\/em>, rests in the 15th division; he is best known for having been shot dead in the newspaper&#8217;s offices by Henriette Caillaux. <strong>Genevi\u00e8ve Tabouis<\/strong>, journalist and international affairs commentator, is in the 27th division. <strong>Claire Motte<\/strong>, principal dancer at the Paris Op\u00e9ra, and <strong>Ray Ventura<\/strong>, bandleader of the Coll\u00e9giens, share the 32nd division.
