Why your hair gets frizzy: what the experts say<\/h2>\n

New York-based hairstylist<\/a> Jackie Seabrooke breaks down the mechanism clearly: when hair lacks moisture, it tries to absorb humidity from the surrounding air. This causes the cuticle to swell, which is what triggers frizz. In a humid climate, the problem naturally intensifies.<\/p>\n

But humidity is not the only culprit. Seabrooke points out that everyday habits also make things worse: washing hair<\/a> with water that is too hot, roughly towel-drying with a regular bath towel, or the damage caused by heat styling tools. Genetics play a role too. In other words, frizz can strike even without a margarita or a beach in sight.<\/p>\n

What to look for on an anti-frizz shampoo label<\/h2>\n

Experts broadly agree on a few key ingredients. Hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos puts oils at the top of the list: jojoba, argan, avocado, coconut and shea butter are among his favourites for taming frizz. Hairstylist Davontae’ Washington also recommends glycerin, which draws moisture into the hair shaft, as well as keratin and amino acids to strengthen the fibre.<\/p>\n

On what to avoid, Washington is unequivocal: sulfates dry out the hair and make frizz worse. Sulfate-free formulas are therefore the way to go, especially for everyday use. Hairstylist Leticia Llesmin adds that panthenol, butters and proteins are among the most effective ingredients in this type of formula.<\/p>\n

Jackie Seabrooke also advises factoring in your hair type before choosing. For fine hair, very rich formulas risk weighing strands down and making them greasy. A lightweight but hydrating product is a better bet.<\/p>\n

    Two further picks round out the selection: Paul Mitchell Anti-Frizz Super Smooth Shampoo ($18)<\/strong>, which preps hair for blow-drying thanks to squalane and glycerin, and Rahua Hydration Shampoo ($38)<\/strong>, formulated with ingredients sourced from the rainforest to hydrate without weighing down any hair type.<\/p>\n

    Beyond shampoo: the habits that actually make a difference<\/h2>\n

    A great shampoo alone is not enough to banish frizz for good. Llesmin stresses the importance of conditioning after every wash, applying a mask once a week and avoiding daily washing to preserve the hair’s natural oils. Finishing your rinse with cold water also helps seal the cuticles.<\/p>\n

    Seabrooke recommends drying hair with a microfibre or satin towel rather than a regular one, which creates friction. She also advises always using a heat protectant before any hot tool, and applying leave-in styling products, serums, oils or creams, to lock in moisture. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase reduces overnight friction, as Giannetos confirms. Finally, regular trims keep split ends at bay, and split ends are a direct contributor to that frizzy, dishevelled look along the lengths.<\/p>\n

    Curly hair specialist Dusty Schlabach reminds us that hair health is always the starting point. Bleached, over-processed or heat-damaged hair will always be harder to tame.
