Imagine plugging in a hair dryer<\/a> bought online for a few euros, only to watch it melt in your hands. This isn’t fiction: an investigation by Gifam, the trade body representing home appliance brands, reveals that 100% of the dangerous hair dryers<\/strong> tested came from online marketplace listings priced under \u20ac18. Not one of the fifteen devices analysed met current safety standards.<\/p>\n

Real risks for users: overheating, melting and zero traceability<\/h2>\n

To conduct the investigation, Gifam purchased appliances from six platforms: AliExpress, Amazon, Boulanger, Cdiscount, Darty and Temu. In every case, the seller was not the platform itself but a third-party company operating through the marketplace<\/a>. That distinction is at the heart of the problem, since these sellers are sometimes impossible to identify.<\/p>\n

The products were then handed over to the LCIE Bureau Veritas laboratory for analysis<\/a>. From the outset, a quarter of the devices had to be excluded from testing: their rating plates were simply missing. Yet that plate is the appliance’s identity card. It identifies the manufacturer, guarantees traceability and provides essential data such as wattage. According to Charles Ly, head of the electrical safety testing laboratory at LCIE Bureau Veritas, its absence compromises both user safety and compliance with applicable regulations.<\/p>\n

Among the devices that could be tested, the faults piled up. Two thirds lacked complete user instructions or safety warnings. On top of that, 20% displayed a power rating<\/a> that did not match the results measured<\/strong> during testing. But the most immediate danger involves overheating: a quarter of the products showed this type of failure, and one of them literally melted in places during the trials.<\/p>\n

“Fast appliances”: an opaque model with lasting consequences<\/h2>\n

These low-cost devices are part of what Gifam calls “fast \u00e9lectrom\u00e9nager”, the home-appliance equivalent of fast fashion. Sold by foreign companies that are difficult to locate, these products offer no recourse in the event of a fault or problem. The result: they typically end up in the bin after a few months of use, with no one available to handle a complaint.<\/p>\n

By contrast, compliant appliances sold legally on the French market go through a rigorous development process. According to Gifam, each product requires 24,000 hours of work<\/strong>, at an average development cost of \u20ac350,000<\/strong>. That process includes robustness, reliability and resistance testing, thousands of hours of intensive operation, followed by disassembly to assess wear. These investments allow an appliance to last an average of 14 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What’s more, you don’t need to spend hundreds of euros to get a reliable hair dryer. Well-known brands such as Babyliss, Shark and Dyson, as well as own-label ranges like Proline and Essentiel B, offer accessible lines that have passed these test batteries before going on sale.<\/p>\n

How to choose a safe hair dryer: the criteria to check<\/h2>\n

With dangerous hair dryers proliferating on online platforms, a few simple habits can keep you protected. Odile Thore, Gifam’s technical director, recommends checking several things as soon as the product arrives, before using it for the first time.<\/p>\n

  • Check that the rating plate bearing the manufacturer’s name is present.<\/li>\n
  • Make sure a user manual in French is included in the packaging.<\/li>\n
  • Verify the warranty terms and after-sales service contact details.<\/li>\n
  • Choose an identifiable seller rather than an anonymous third party on a marketplace.<\/li>\n
  • Opt for a recognised brand, even at the entry-level end of the range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    For basic, occasional use, a budget under \u20ac100 is perfectly adequate. On the spec sheet, wattage is a key indicator: a minimum of 1,600 W is recommended for fast drying<\/strong>. Fine hair, on the other hand, is better suited to around 1,200 W. The ideal appliance lets you adjust both power and temperature, since above 70\u00b0C hair risks being damaged.<\/p>\n

    Practical tips for safe drying<\/h2>\n

    Beyond choosing the right appliance, certain habits reduce the risks associated with a dangerous hair dryer. Keeping the airflow 15 to 20 cm away from the roots limits heat damage. Likewise, the cool-shot button, found on many models, sets the style without exposing hair to excessive heat.<\/p>\n

    Ionic technology, now built into all recent models, emits negative ions that eliminate static and frizz while adding shine. Finally, the weight of the appliance is worth considering: above 600 g, comfort of use drops noticeably<\/strong>.
