Self-tanners for the face: our 3 favourites for a golden complexion without the sun
It’s possible to tan without UV. Long shunned for their orangey tint, facial self-tanners are making a comeback in a clean, sensorial, made-to-measure version.
Self-tanners are much better now
The story begins in the 1920s, with Procter & Gamble’s discovery of the coloring effects of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a molecule derived from sugarcane. Although initial tests produced only approximate results (hello carrot complexion), it wasn’t until the 1980s that the product established itself as a credible alternative to sun tanning.
Today, formulas have gained in subtlety and textures blend perfectly into skincare routines, thanks in particular to active ingredients such as erythrulose, a sweet sugar extracted from red berries, which gradually colors the skin.
Our selection: the top 3 self-tanners for the face
La Biosthétique – Self Tanning Drops (€29.50)
With a formula concentrated in naturally-derived DHA, this product is dosed to the drop in its moisturizing cream. Result: a subtle, modulated tan, without demarcation. Bonus: sugar alcohols moisturize and soften the skin. All without stickiness or heady fragrance.
Typology – Bronzing Concentrate (€22.90)
We love its duo of star active ingredients: antioxidant vitamin E and apricot extract for an immediate glow. Its fluid, silicone-free texture, with 95% ingredients of natural origin, makes it perfect for sensitive or combination skin. Mix with a tinted serum for an instant healthy-glow effect.
Lancaster – Self Tan Drops (€29.92)
We love its tan-activating complex and precision pipette application. The tan develops in just 1 hour and lasts up to 7 days. Combine with Sun Perfect Illuminating Cream SPF 50 to combine tanning and protection.
