A secret château in Burgundy you’ll love

With its truffles, vaulted jacuzzi and Michelin-starred cuisine, Château de Vault-de-Lugny promises a timeless interlude just two hours from Paris. A well-kept secret in the heart of Burgundy.

A heartfelt address born of a family dream

It all began in the 60s, whenÉlisabeth Bourzeix ‘s father came across a classified ad for a château for sale in Vault-de-Lugny. A few decades later, Élisabeth, assisted by her husband Pascal, transformed this former residence of the Dukes of Burgundy into a prestigious home, without ever indulging in ostentation.

Just 16 rooms, two passionate hoteliers, a made-to-measure welcome: here, luxury is lived in discretion and detail, far from the codes of formatted palaces. Every guest is welcomed “as if at home”, in an atmosphere of hushed elegance.

A château steeped in history… and serenity

Built in 1120 and surrounded by a moat, Château de Vault-de-Lugny has stood the test of time. Owned by the de Jaucourt family, then dismantled under Louis XI, it still preserves one of the few XIVᵉ century keeps in Burgundy. A precious architectural testimony, to be explored by climbing to its summit.

Outside, a 70-hectare park is home to peacocks, sheep, geese and even a truffle dog, Omega, the property’s mascot. The Cousin river, classified as a first category river, runs through the property: the perfect opportunity to enjoy a spot of fishing before entrusting your catch to the starred chef for tailor-made preparation.

A royal night in an authentic setting

Each room is different, but all reflect the history of the place: period woodwork, antique parquet floors, fireplaces, canopies, flowery tapestries… Special mention for the Chambre du Roy, once reserved for visiting sovereigns, with its ceiling restored with lily leaf using 17th-century techniques.

For lovers, the suite with lion’s foot bath and view of the park offers an unrivalled romantic setting. And for all, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and top-of-the-range bedding ensure discreet but total comfort.

A Michelin-starred restaurant

Since 2019, Franco Bowanee has held high the colors of Le Valucien, the Michelin-starred restaurant of the château. Born in Mauritius, the chef breathes a touch of the exotic into a solidly French base. His cuisine is bold, colorful and precise, and sublimates local produce: black bass, sweetbreads, Cousin trout and Fleury-la-Vallée asparagus.

At her side, Karina Laval, pastry chef and companion in life, transforms acacia flowers into sorbet or perfumes her macaroons with old roses picked from the garden. She was voted Best Pâtissière 2024 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté by Gault & Millau. A rare and complementary duo that makes every meal an experience.

Tailor-made activities in a magical setting

Château de Vault-de-Lugny also boasts a unique spa: an indoor pool heated to 30°C, nestled in a medieval cellar with stone vaults, available for private use in the evening for unforgettable moments for two, with champagne and homemade mignardises.

Gourmets can try their hand at truffle hunting from autumn onwards, guided by Omega and its legendary flair. The more sporty can get on their bikes or follow the GR 13 trails through hills, forests and panoramic views of Vézelay, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

And for culture-lovers, the Zervos museum, the Vézelay basilica and the region’s contemporary art galleries offer the perfect artistic counterpoint to this relaxing nature holiday.

Why book now

Because it’s a place still untouched by mass tourism, where each stay is conceived as a chapter in its own right. Because the 16 rooms are often fully booked several months in advance. And because, in a world where everything moves too fast, this château offers something rare: silence, time and depth.
