A sequel to “Play it like Beckham”: women’s soccer takes to the field again
Gurinder Chadha is preparing a sequel to the cult film “Play it like Beckham” to celebrate its 25th anniversary. A project in line with the rise of women’s soccer, which could well thrill Parisian fans too.
Released in 2002, Joue-la comme Beckham left its mark on an entire generation. Gurinder Chadha‘s film, which followed the paths of Jess (Parminder Nagra) and Jules (Keira Knightley), two young women with a passion for soccer, is making a comeback. The director has confirmed that a sequel is in the pipeline, inspired by the evolution of women’s soccer worldwide.
It was during a match at the European Women’s Championship in Switzerland that Chadha got the idea. Although she had always rejected the idea of a second part, the energy of the game and the growing success of women’s soccer prompted her to take up the pen again. The director is aiming for a release in 2027, to mark the 25th anniversary of the first film and coincide with the Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Is the original cast back?
Keira Knightley, Parminder Nagra and the rest of the original cast have been contacted. Their participation will depend on the quality of the script. Chadha promises a real narrative for each character, refusing simple nostalgic winks. The idea is to recapture the authenticity and emotion that made the first film such a success.
Of particular note is the collaboration with Emma Hayes, current coach of the U.S. women’s team. An unconditional fan of the original film, she is now working hand in hand with Chadha to guarantee the project’s sporting credibility.
A film still relevant today
At a time when women’s soccer is experiencing unprecedented growth, this sequel is particularly relevant. In France, interest in the sport is growing steadily, particularly in Paris. With clubs such as Paris FC féminin and Paris Saint-Germain, the capital is establishing itself as a breeding ground for talent. The film could resonate with young Parisian women who dream of playing on the pitch.
