This legendary Montparnasse bar saved by celebrities

A stone’s throw from Boulevard du Montparnasse, the Rosebud has been reborn thanks to the commitment of several Parisian personalities. A literary bistro turned festive haunt.

Since 1962, the Rosebud has established itself as a discreet but essential address on the Left Bank. Located 11 bis rue Delambre, close to the Vavin metro station, this bar has long attracted a clientele of writers and artists. Among its regulars were Marguerite Duras, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Roland Barthes and Samuel Beckett. In other words, this bistro, immersed in a hushed atmosphere, still exudes the neighborhood’s intellectual heritage.

A unique blend of literature and cinema

As soon as you enter, the décor sets the tone. On the walls, a poster of Citizen Kane recalls the origin of the name Rosebud, a nod to the mysterious “rosebud” that closesOrson Welles‘ masterpiece. In the dining room, a pianist accompanies the evening, while customers gather at the bar or on the velvet banquettes. In fine weather, the small terrace on rue Delambre becomes a popular place to enjoy the Montparnasse district, a hotbed of Parisian artistic life.

A varied and carefully-crafted cocktail menu

Le Rosebud also offers a wide selection of classic cocktails: Negroni, Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule and Dry Martini, priced from 15 to 22 euros. The house also indulges in original creations, such as the Blue Velvet, a surprising blend of gin, Noilly Prat, surapawa, ginger and violet liqueur. The menu is accompanied by some simple but effective dishes, ranging from 8 to 24 euros: eggs mayo, vegetable tempura, or the chili con carne R62, a nod to the name of the place and the year it opened.

Saved by celebrities

In 2025, the Rosebud almost disappeared, a victim of declining attendance. But a collective of seven friends decided to save it. Among them were well-known faces from the world of cinema and music: Chiara Mastroianni, Melvil Poupaud, Benjamin Biolay and Mathieu Demy. They all wanted to preserve the soul of this historic Montparnasse bar, and it’s not uncommon to bump into them at the bar.
