L’Arrêt by The Grey: a Parisian bistro with the soul of the American South

In the 7th arrondissement, a new restaurant is causing a sensation: L’Arrêt by The Grey, born of the meeting between Paris and Savannah, between French bistro and Afro-American cuisine.
Located at 36 rue de l’Université, L’Arrêt is much more than a trendy new restaurant: it’s an address that tells a story, that of a dialogue between cultures, orchestrated by Michelin-starred chef Mashama Bailey and her partner Johno Morisano. Together, they have revived the former L’Espérance café, a neighborhood landmark, by injecting it with the soul of the American South.
This is not the first time this tandem has worked together. Their critically acclaimed restaurant The Grey in Savannah has already earned them international recognition. Mashama Bailey, featured in Chef’s Table on Netflix, is now making her mark on the Parisian gastronomic scene.
A committed, cross-cultural menu
At L’Arrêt, every dish tells a story, one of migration, culinary heritage and a desire to build bridges between flavors. The Chicken Country Captain, our signature dish, is a perfect example: braised chicken, curry, almonds, parsley and roasted garlic sourdough bread form a subtle marriage between Southern tradition and Parisian gastronomic standards.
The menu doesn’t give in to the trend for the superfluous. Here, everything is homemade, with products chosen for their quality, and a true sense of taste. A well-crafted drinks menu completes the experience.
An atmosphere of heritage and modernity
The original marble counter and vaulted cellar have been preserved, reinforcing the local roots of the place while welcoming a charming vintage decor. It’s as much a place for a quick lunch as for an extended dinner with friends. The cozy yet friendly atmosphere attracts both local regulars and curious visitors from further afield.
With L’Arrêt, the 7th arrondissement offers an atypical address, mixed and sincere, faithful to the bistro spirit, but open to the world. A culinary stopover not to be missed in Paris.
