Chloé Malle takes over the editorial reins at Vogue US: a new lease of life post-Anna Wintour

Daughter of Louis Malle and Candice Bergen, Chloé Malle is Vogue US’s new head of editorial content. A strategic appointment in the post-Wintour era.

Anna Wintour ‘s departure from the editorial management of Vogue US, after almost forty years of reign, marks a historic turning point in the fashion world. While she retains her global role at Condé Nast, she has chosen to pass the torch to Chloé Malle, a name already well known in New York cultural circles. A carefully considered decision, which she herself describes as “a change that touches the heart more deeply than others.”

Daughter of French director Louis Malle and American actress Candice Bergen, Chloé Malle embodies a dual Franco-American culture and an artistic sensibility shaped from childhood. She studied literature, worked for the New York Observer, then for the New York Times, before joining Vogue US in 2011 as Social Editor. She quickly rose through the ranks to become Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.com in 2023. Her move to digital was accompanied by a strategic shift: development of exclusive formats, podcasts and paid subscriptions.

A discreet but real Parisian base

Chloé Malle may have grown up in the United States, but her link with Paris is not anecdotal. Through her father, she maintains a strong cultural proximity to the French capital, a historic bastion of fashion. Vogue Paris (now Vogue France) and Vogue US enjoy a close symbolic and editorial relationship, which Chloé Malle could strengthen through transatlantic collaborations or shared event projects. Why not imagine an edition of Vogue World in Paris?

A complex handover in a changing media environment

The task will not be easy: print is in crisis, digital competition is fierce, and the audience is fragmenting. Chloé Malle will have to impose her own editorial vision, while retaining the Vogue DNA. Her challenge is also generational: to speak to young people without distorting a legendary title. As she says: “Vogue shaped who I am, now I’m excited about shaping Vogue.”
