In June 2026, the oldest bridge in Paris will undergo a spectacular metamorphosis. Artist JR will unveil the Caverne du Pont Neuf, a monumental installation that promises to redefine the way we look at this iconic site. This ephemeral work promises to be the major artistic event of the Paris summer.
JR transforms the Pont Neuf into a giant cave
French artist JR, renowned for his large-scale photographic collages, is back with a project of unprecedented ambition. This time, it’s no longer a question of pasting images on walls. He will literally wrap the Pont Neuf in an impressive textile structure.
The Caverne du Pont Neuf will cover an area of 2,400 m². Visitors will be able to walk under a vault 120 metres long and 18 metres high. As a result, the experience promises to be immersive and gripping.
The installation is based on 80 textile arches, creating the illusion of a natural grotto. What’s more, the whole thing will weigh just 5 tonnes and contain around 20,000 m³ of air. The technical lightness contrasts with the massive visual impact of the work.

A technical challenge on a historic monument
Installing such a structure on the oldest bridge in Paris is a real challenge. The Pont Neuf, completed in 1607, remains a listed monument requiring strict precautions. However, JR and his teams have designed a system that respects the integrity of the heritage.

Tourists on the bateau-mouche will also benefit from a unique viewpoint. From the Seine, the textile structure will reveal a mysterious, organic silhouette. Indeed, the work has been designed to be viewed from several angles.
