Why the new Aronofsky may shake things up

What if urban chaos became Darren Aronofsky’s new playground? With Caught in the Trap, the director of Black Swan returns to his first love: tension, obsession and the inevitable fall.

A return to the thriller, Aronofsky style

Following the critical success of The Whale and Brendan Fraser‘s Oscar win, Darren Aronofsky takes a darker, edgier turn. In Caught in the Middle, he takes us back to the New York of the 90s, with its menacing streets, gang conflicts and suffocating atmosphere.

Austin Butler, a far cry from his Elvis role, plays Hank Thompson, a former baseball player who has fallen prey to a spiral of crime. Why is he being pursued? Who betrayed him? And how far is he willing to go to survive?

An explosive cast of confirmed stars and surprises

Joining him are Zoë Kravitz as Hank’s girlfriend Yvonne, and Matt Smith as the unexpected antagonist: a chilling, raging English punk. Singer Bad Bunny completes the cast, adding a musical touch to a high-tension plot.

Adapted from Charlie Huston‘s thriller, the film promises to be raw, intense and resolutely rocking, as the trailer to the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” suggests.

A visual and mental signature intact

Since Pi (1998), Aronofsky has explored the gray areas of the human soul: addiction(Requiem for a Dream), grief(The Fountain), identity(Black Swan). Caught in a Trap follows in his footsteps: a man confronts his demons, trapped in a city with no way out.

Things to remember about Aronofsky’s next film

Scheduled for release on August 27, 2025, Caught in the Trap could well become the psychological thriller of the fall season. Taut, stylized and existential, it promises to be the talk of the town.
