“Mamma Mia 3”: a sequel full of sunshine, emotion… and new stars?
Fifteen years after the first film, Mamma Mia! is about to write a new chapter. And fans couldn’t believe their ears: the long-heralded project is finally taking shape.
A long-dreamed-of project finally back on track
Since 2020, producer Judy Craymer had been hinting that a trilogy was in the pipeline. In May 2025, she confirmed: “We know what we want to do with the film, and it will see the light of day.” The script is said to already exist, although no details have yet been officially leaked.
Even more exciting, Sabrina Carpenter, the pop revelation of recent years, could join the team. She would play a mystical figure, perhaps even a relative bearing an uncanny resemblance to Donna, played by Meryl Streep.
A look back at a cult saga
As a reminder, the first part followed Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she tried to identify her father from among three suitors, to the sound ofABBA hits. The second, more introspective, revisited Donna’ s (Lily James) youth and introduced her mother Ruby, played by Cher.
This third film could explore the life of Sophie’s son Ruby(Donny), or introduce other members of this atypical family. Whatever the case, the promise remains the same: sun, music and nostalgia.
A loyal (and enthusiastic) cast
Christine Baranski (Tanya) confirmed in 2024 that filming was under discussion. Amanda Seyfried, meanwhile, is more than enthusiastic: “Every single person on this adventure would be up for it in a second.”
And Meryl Streep? Although her character has passed away, she will appear again in flashbacks. So there’ll be plenty of emotion to go around.
A feel-good film
For Craymer, Mamma Mia! 3 is not just another sequel. It’s a collective need for joy, music and human connection. At a time when cinema is struggling to reconnect with its audience, the return of this cult saga could well be the long-awaited ray of sunshine.
