The Théâtre Daunou: a blue Art Deco jewel soon back in Paris
Just a stone’s throw from the Opéra Garnier, the Théâtre Daunou prepares to reopen after five years of renovation. A unique venue in Paris, entirely decorated in blue.
In the 2ᵉ arrondissement, just a few meters from the bustling boulevards, hides a rare gem of Parisian heritage: the Daunou theater. Closed since 2020 for renovations, this historic monument is about to reopen its doors after a complete refurbishment by Studio Vincent Eschalier.
What makes it exceptional? Its blue decor, an absolute singularity in a theatrical landscape traditionally dominated by red tones. Here, imperial red gives way to Lanvin blue, in homage to the famous couturier Jeanne Lanvin, a close friend of the venue’s founder, actress Jane Renouardt.
Decor by Jeanne Lanvin
Opened in 1921, the Théâtre Daunou is a pure product of1920s Art Deco. At the time, Jeanne Lanvin imagined a refined auditorium, dressed in deep blue and adorned with golden daisies, the designer’s signature flower. This bold choice was intended to showcase the public, at a time when it was as important to be seen as to see.
At the time, blue was an uncommon color for theaters, adding a touch of elegance and mystery. This aesthetic choice, preserved to this day, makes the Daunou the only all-blue theater in the capital.
A long-awaited reopening
After a fire in 1970 and several decades without restoration, the theater was in dire need of a facelift. Ceilings, gilding, seats, stage, acoustics: everything was revamped. Although the reopening was initially scheduled for September 2024, then postponed until January 2025, the public will have to wait a little longer. However, the latest images of the work suggest that it could reopen by the end of 2025.
With its charm intact, its historic cachet and modernized lines, the Théâtre Daunou promises to once again become a cultural landmark on the Right Bank.
