A Great Chef’s Little Garden

Le Jardin du Clarence
Le Jardin du Clarence

Through early August, Le Clarence opens the doors to its garden, tucked away behind its cellar, nestled among the centuries-old stones of the mansion.

Behind the majestic portico of the mansion that houses Le Clarence, a surprise awaits those in the know. This summer, the lush inner courtyard of the two-Michelin-starred restaurant is being transformed into the Jardin du Clarence. A serene retreat in the 8th arrondissement (the trickling water of the pretty fountain certainly contributes to the atmosphere) where one can indulge in a leisurely afternoon.

The stars are becoming lighter

This tea-time-style format offers a chance to explore the world of Chef Andrea Capasso through a menu that, while more accessible, is just as refined as the à la carte menu at Le Clarence, which has held two Michelin stars since 2017. The chef and his teams present two menus—one savory, the other sweet—which can be combined into three set menus of varying sizes.

We can’t get enough of the zucchini flower tempura and the burrata and caviar maritozzo—a refreshing treat in the urban jungle that is Paris. The more popular buffalo mozzarella arancini is sure to satisfy even the heartiest appetites.

For those with a sweet tooth who want to share, be sure to order the Raspberry Jasmine Cake. Remarkably delicate: the sponge is moist and melt-in-your-mouth without being heavy, the raspberries aren’t too tart, the shortbread is thin, and the jasmine is just present enough—it doesn’t overwhelm the senses. Another favorite is the blackberry pavlova. A masterpiece of lightness. The herb sorbet contrasts with the sweetness of the berries. We’ve uncovered one of this dessert’s secrets: Chartreuse. An honorable mention goes to the cocoa mille-feuille, which is best enjoyed on cooler days.

Le Jardin du Clarence is also an integral part of the identity of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the restaurant’s parent company. The beverage menu therefore showcases wines from its estates, served by the glass or by the bottle.

With only 16 seats (but three seatings) in this tree-lined courtyard, be sure to make a reservation so you don’t miss out.
