Kaia Gerber confronts Bret Easton Ellis

What if Kaia Gerber wasn’t just a magazine face? The model-reader proves, once again, that she goes beyond clichés. This time, she’s headlining a much-anticipated series based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel The Shards. An announcement that could mark a real turning point in her career.

From book club to film set

At the head of her Library Science book club, Kaia Gerber has been sharing her literary favorites with over 80,000 subscribers for the past year. Readings ranging from Virginie Despentes to Marguerite Duras, between slogan baby tees and fluorescent highlighters. A pop and cerebral image that breaks stereotypes, to the point of becoming a true generational phenomenon.

Today, this taste for words leads her to FX and Ryan Murphy, with whom she had previously worked in American Horror Story. Together, they adapted The Shards, a chilling autofiction by a teenage Bret Easton Ellis, with its mix of paranoia, mystery and adolescent impulses.

A cult novel, an unexpected heroine

Released in 2023, The Shards plunges us into young Ellis’s last year of high school, haunted by the troubled past of a new student, Robert Mallory, and the shadow of a serial killer nicknamed The Trawler. A fragmented, disturbing, ultra-personal tale, made for the camera… and for an actress in transformation.

Kaia Gerber is tipped for the central female role, with Max Winkler directing. Her recent filmography in Bottoms and Shell has already proven her ability to embrace dark, complex and often confusing roles.

Things to remember

Kaia Gerber is definitively shedding her “daughter of” label. With The Shards, she enters more cerebral, riskier territory. And more captivating.
