Every year, we want a Christmas tree that stays beautiful, fragrant and safe until Epiphany. However, a simple bad habit can shorten everything, whereas a very practical tip really prolongs its freshness, a bit like those enchanted festivities we prepare with care.

The simple rule that changes everything

The key is to cut back 1 to 2 cm at the base, then immediately place the trunk in a stand with water. This way, the sap doesn’t clog the vessels and hydration is restored. What’s more, fill to the brim the first time, as you would for a generous Christmas tea party. Therefore, always keep the level above the cup.

Within 24 hours of installation, the tree drinks a lot. So check morning and evening and top up without delay. Many people add sugar or aspirin; however, tests are divided and clear water is sufficient. Also, tempered water at the first refill facilitates absorption, just as you would for a long cruise where you anticipate every detail.

Placement is just as important as watering. Keep the tree away from radiators, fireplaces and very sunny bays, as heat accelerates needle drop. Also, aim for a room temperature of 18-20°C. Last but not least, a Nordmann holds its needles better than a Spruce, which is useful if your Christmas tree is to last several weeks, as when you’re enjoying a fairytale Christmas market all season long.

“A freshly cut trunk and a foot that’s always full: that’s the basis of a tree that stands, without artifice.”

Step-by-step installation to preserve freshness

Unpack outside, shake gently, then remove the net once the tree is in place. This minimizes bumps and needles on the ground. Center the trunk straight in the base and tighten gradually. Also, don’t remove the bark: it protects the absorption.

Adopt a daily routine. Check the water level, then turn the tree a quarter turn to distribute the light. In addition, opt for low-heat LED lights. That way, your Christmas tree stays hydrated and safer throughout the festive season.

  • Recut the base just before launching
  • Fill the foot to the brim, check morning and evening
  • Avoid heat sources within 1 m
  • Choose low-temperature LEDs
  • Lift and vacuum needles daily

There are a lot of misconceptions out there. The spray can help, but keep it light and away from plugs. On the other hand, avoid artificial snow spray, which dries out and interferes with recycling. Also, limit the use of home fragrances near your Christmas tree: the dry, fragrant air doesn’t help.

Varieties, local footprint and waterbed: making the right choices

Nordmann or Spruce? The former keeps its needles longer and stings less, while the latter smells more of resin. So, if you’re heating hard, opt for Nordmann. What’s more, aiming for local, PEFC-certified production reduces your footprint. Your Christmas tree will also be fresher, and therefore last longer.

EasyFix – EasyFix (Water Reservoir Stand) facilitates daily maintenance. The integrated reservoir stabilizes the tree and keeps it level, ensuring stress-free hydration of your Christmas tree.

If you have a garden, a rootball tree is still a credible option. So, temper it in a garage 24-48 h before bringing it indoors, then limit its stay there to 10-15 days. Water the rootball as it dries on the surface, without soaking it. Then replant frost-free, with mulch and a watering can ready for dry days.

And after the holidays? Take advantage of municipal collections for mulch recycling. Avoid glued decorations, glues and flockings, which disrupt the process. What’s more, shake the tree outside before transporting it, to limit needles in the car. The final gesture counts as much as the initial choice.

Air quality, health and safety

Spores and dust are sometimes deposited on branches. A brief rinse with cold water outside, followed by drying out of the wind, will reduce these traces. In addition, air the room for five minutes every day. Your Christmas tree will stay fresh, and the air inside will be more comfortable.

Take extra care with children and pets. Secure the foot, secure the grips and keep the water in the foot out of reach. That way, no impromptu sips or spills. On the other hand, a climbing cat can unbalance the tree: anchor a discreet fastener to the wall.

The right tempo throughout December

The first three days are crucial. Add water as soon as the level drops, sometimes by more than1 liter on the first day. Check in the morning and evening. Your Christmas tree will then stabilize its consumption.

Freschertree® – Freschertree® (Water Stand) is all about simplicity and safety. The level indicator helps you anticipate the need for topping up, so you can keep your Christmas tree going without a second thought.

The second week, adjust your routine. Also, move the tree further away if you often light the fireplace. A humidity level of 40-50% limits drying out. A small humidifier, placed at a distance, can help.

When the time comes to remove it, keep your movements gentle. Place a bag around the trunk before removing it from the foot. This protects the ground and makes transport easier. Your Christmas tree leaves the house clean and ready for collection.
