Sarah Burton: an exemplary career
Sarah Burton, a graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, began her career at Alexander McQueen in 1997. Initially an assistant to the eponymous designer, she quickly rose through the ranks to become Creative Director in 2010, following the designer’s tragic death. During her 13 years at the helm of McQueen, she preserved the master’s legacy by establishing her own trademark, characterized by precise cuts, romantic audacity and unrivalled attention to detail.
She is best known for creating Catherine Middleton’s wedding dress. Her work for McQueen has also been hailed for its powerful, poetic silhouettes, combining femininity and structure, traits that have seduced international icons such as Lady Gaga. In taking the helm at Givenchy, Sarah Burton is following in a tradition of continuity.
Indeed, she recalls that Alexander McQueen himself had already held this position in the 1990s. His ability to navigate between heritage and innovation will be an invaluable asset for the house, as it seeks to strengthen its international influence under the aegis of LVMH. His style promises to usher in a new creative era for Givenchy, to be followed closely at the upcoming Fashion Weeks.
