Sofia Coppola reunites with Kirsten Dunst for a new film due in 2026

Director Sofia Coppola and her favorite actress Kirsten Dunst will be working together again on a feature film due to start shooting in 2026.

Cinema loves artistic loyalties, and the one between Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst is a shining example. After Virgin Suicides (1999), Marie-Antoinette (2006) and Les Proies (2017), the two women are set to write a new chapter in their collaboration. The announcement was made by the actress herself in an interview with Town and Country magazine.

A long-standing artistic partnership

In 1999, Sofia Coppola offered sixteen-year-old Kirsten Dunst her first breakthrough role: Lux Lisbon in Virgin Suicides. The film, which has since gained a cult following, already laid the foundations for a singular visual language and a relationship of absolute trust between the director and her actress.
In an interview with Variety, Kirsten Dunst confided that Coppola had played an essential role in her adolescence, helping her to accept her insecurities and assert herself on screen. It’s a relationship that has grown stronger with each successive project.

In 2006, their collaboration took on an even more emblematic dimension with Marie-Antoinette, in which Dunst played the famous Queen of France in a baroque fresco filmed in Versailles. Then in 2017, the actress reunited with the director for Les Proies, a closed-door drama alongside Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell.

A project still shrouded in mystery

Little information has been released about the new film that will reunite the two women. All we know is that shooting is scheduled for 2026, giving Sofia Coppola plenty of time to fine-tune what will become her ninth feature film. True to her style, we can expect a work centered on the intimate, the feminine and psychological tensions, themes she has explored since her debut.

Paris, a recurring setting

The choice of Kirsten Dunst is also a reminder of the close ties between the pair and Paris. Marie-Antoinette, in particular, offered sumptuous scenes filmed in Versailles, marking one of the most iconic portrayals of the capital on screen. So it’s not impossible that the City of Light will find a place in this future project, given Sofia Coppola’s ability to capture its elegance and history.
