Weaving, embroidering, sublimating: fashion know-how at the Palais Galliera

From December 13, 2025, the Palais Galliera will be devoting a major exhibition to the art of fashion. A fascinating plunge into the world of weaving, embroidery and lace, at the heart of Parisian heritage.

The Paris Fashion Museum opens a new series of exhibitions dedicated to fashion know-how, with the first edition focusing on the arts of ornamentation. Entitled “Tisser, broder, sublimer” (Weave, Embroider, Sublimate), this exhibition highlights the patient, meticulous art of the craftsmen who have been embellishing clothes and accessories since the 18th century. Through the motif of the flower, the main theme of the exhibition, visitors discover the richness of a constantly evolving textile vocabulary: brocaded fabrics, prints, lace, embroidery and artificial flowers. Over 350 works – garments, accessories, photographs, graphic arts and samples – illustrate the diversity of techniques and gestures that sublimate the material.

The hidden jobs behind the big houses

Often in the shadow of fashion designers, artisans are the real protagonists here. The Palais Galliera showcases emblematic houses such as Lesage and Hurel, as well as contemporary talents such as Baqué Molinié and Aurélia Leblanc. These behind-the-scenes designers embody the continuity of a French savoir-faire recognized the world over.
The exhibition also features immersive displays: tables equipped with magnifying glasses allow visitors to observe the detail of embroidery or the delicacy of lace. A dialogue is established between tradition and innovation, between an 18th-century vest and a contemporary laser-printed creation by Balenciaga.

An ode to Parisian fashion heritage

Beyond the beauty of the pieces on display, “Tisser, broder, sublimer” also tells the story of Paris, capital of exceptional craftsmanship. It is here, in the workshops nestled between the Marais and 16th arrondissements, that these crafts continue to evolve. The Palais Galliera is thus a place of transmission and recognition for these artisans, indispensable to French fashion.
