Métro République: 8 years of work and 5 lines closed one after the other, what you need to know to plan ahead

ParisSelect - Métro République : 8 ans de travaux et 5 lignes fermées tour à tour, ce qu'il faut savoir pour anticiper

République station is about to undergo a major transformation. This central hub of the Paris metro, frequented by thousands of passengers every day, will be undergoing construction work fromsummer 2026. And this situation will last much longer than expected.

A colossal project to build the République metro until 2034

Paris network users will have to be patient. République station will be under construction from summer 2026 to 2034. This means 8 years of construction work ahead for local residents and commuters alike.

RATP has decided to proceed line by line. As a result, each closure will last between 13 and 24 months, according to the latest information. This method means that part of the station will remain accessible, even if there will be many disruptions.

For those who live in the area, it’s best to plan ahead. From now on, it’s a matter of urgency to find alternative routes on the map of the capital.

“The République stop will not be served from 22/07/26 to 22/04/27, but only on metro line 8. The line will run normally, but trains will not stop at this station during the entire construction period.”

Why is such a renovation so urgent?

République station is home to 5 metro lines: 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11. Every day, no fewer than 250,000 passengers board, alight or transit the station. This massive ridership has a direct impact on the condition of the underground station.

What’s more, since the redevelopment of Place République in 2013, the station has been suffering from serious seepage problems. The water is weakening the infrastructure, posing safety problems. The extension of line 11 has also amplified the influx of passengers.

  • Installing a shield against infiltration
  • Renovation of vaults, floors and ceilings
  • Lighting upgrade
  • Signage redesign
  • Reorganization of passenger flows

The timetable for line-by-line closures

RATP has announced a precise schedule for this major project. It all begins with line 8, whose République stop will be unserved from July 22, 2026. This first phase will last until spring 2027, i.e. around 9 months.

Line 9 will then take over between 2028 and 2029. This will be followed by line 5, from 2029 to 2030. Work on line 11 will extend from 2031 to 2032.

Finally, line 3 will bring this marathon to a close between 2033 and 2034. During these phases, trains will continue to run normally on each line. However, they will not stop at République station.

What this means for day-to-day travellers

In concrete terms, users will have to adapt their journeys according to the line affected. For example, from summer 2026, those taking line 8 will have to get off at a nearby station. They will then be able to reach République on foot or via a transfer.

This phased organization offers a significant advantage. In fact, the station will never be completely closed during these 8 years. The other four lines will remain accessible during each construction phase.

An investment in user comfort and safety

Despite the inconvenience, this renovation project meets a number of major challenges. First and foremost, RATP wants to rehabilitate the infrastructure, which has been weakened by water. Seepage is a risk that can no longer be ignored.

The aim is also to cope with the growing number of passengers. With 250,000 passengers a day, the station needs to offer better traffic conditions. The reorganization of traffic flows should make travel more fluid.

Improved lighting and signage will also contribute to user comfort. The aim is to modernize an ageing station, while ensuring safety for all. In this way, the Paris metro is preparing for the future, even if it will be a long road ahead.

For Parisians and visitors alike, these years of construction work will require adaptation. And yet, when all is said and done, République station should offer a much better welcome to its millions of annual users.
