The Bois de Vincennes is Paris’s largest green space, covering 995 hectares to the east of the capital. With botanical gardens, lakes, historic monuments, festivals, and restaurants, this vast green oasis in the 12th arrondissement holds far more surprises than one might imagine at first glance.

Must-See Attractions

The Parc Floral de Paris, located on Route de la Pyramide, is a botanical garden that offers free activities, playgrounds, and relaxation areas. As such, it is ideal for both families and solo visitors seeking peace and quiet.

The Paris Zoological Park, located on Avenue Daumesnil, offers an immersive experience of global biodiversity. Some areas are perfect for picnicking surrounded by nature, making it a great day out for children.

The Château de Vincennes, a former royal residence, is home to the tallest medieval keep in Europe. This historic site uniquely blends cultural heritage and nature. The Palais de la Porte Dorée, located at 293 Avenue Daumesnil, rounds out the cultural offerings with its Art Deco masterpiece, the National Museum of the History of Immigration, and its tropical aquarium.

“It’s a real breath of fresh air, just a few minutes by metro from downtown Paris.”

More secluded spots, off the beaten path

The Théâtre de la Cartoucherie, housed in a former military factory on Route du Champ de Manoeuvre, hosts several theater companies that present contemporary performances in a welcoming atmosphere. It is a major hub for artistic creation, yet it remains little known to the general public.

The Grande Pagode, located at 40 bis route de Ceinture du lac Daumesnil, offers a serene setting with a garden and a monumental statue of Buddha. Just a stone’s throw from the lake, this peaceful site invites visitors to meditate and take a stroll. In addition, the René Dumont Tropical Agronomy Garden, located at 45 Avenue de la Belle Gabrielle, features colonial ruins and exotic vegetation of both botanical and historical significance.

Outdoor activities for all skill levels

Sports enthusiasts have three fitness trails equipped with exercise stations: one around Lake Daumesnil, up to 2,150 m long for advanced levels; one at Les Minimes, 1,800 m long; and one at La Patte d’Oie, 1,300 m long and shaded. The paths are also ideal for jogging, walking, and biking.

For team sports, the Municipal Sports Park and Pershing Stadium offer numerous open-access courts for soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Therefore, there’s no need to make a reservation to use these facilities.

Around Lake Daumesnil, you can rent a rowboat from March through November, take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along a flat 2-km loop, or enjoy pony rides along the trails. Explore Paris also offers themed guided tours focusing on biodiversity, arboriculture, and the history of the site.
