Dermatologists are clear: these are the products that actually boost hair growth

Every morning, the bathroom sink tells the same story: hair collecting in the drain, a hairline that keeps creeping back, a mane that grows thinner by the month. The market is flooded with solutions, but not all of them are worth your money. Two experts, Dr Daniel Gould, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, and Dr Saami Khalifian, dermatologist and founder of SOM Aesthetics, agreed to separate fact from fiction when it comes to products that genuinely support hair growth.

Understanding why hair thins before you reach for a product

Before rushing to buy the first formula you come across, you need to identify the root cause of the problem. According to Dr Khalifian, genetics remain the single most decisive factor: androgenetic alopecia is the most common reason for hair loss in both men and women. Hormones also play a central role, as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) gradually shrinks hair follicles, leading to visible thinning over time.

Other causes compound the picture. Chronic stress can trigger a state in which increasing numbers of hairs shift into the shedding phase. Deficiencies in iron, vitamin D or protein also slow growth. And poor hair habits, such as washing too frequently, heat damage or excessive colouring, weaken the hair fibre itself.

Dr Gould stresses one key point: a product’s effectiveness depends directly on its active ingredients and the underlying cause of the loss. Seeing a doctor before making any purchase remains the first serious step.

The ingredients that actually make a difference for hair growth

Among all the actives on the market, two stand out for their clinical validation. Minoxidil is a topical vasodilator that extends the follicle growth phase and improves density. Finasteride, an oral DHT inhibitor, halts shedding and can even trigger regrowth in some cases. Other ingredients such as peptides, exosomes and growth factors are also showing promising results, according to Dr Khalifian.

Dr Khalifian does, however, warn against overblown promises. If a product claims to cure baldness or regrow hair overnight, that is false advertising. Regrowth takes between 3 and 6 months to produce visible changes, and full results can take up to a year. Consistency is therefore non-negotiable.

Which type of product to choose for your situation

Each product format addresses a specific need. Serums target hormonal issues or scalp health. Supplements work when there is a genuine nutritional deficiency. Topical shampoos and serums stimulate the scalp and encourage cell renewal. Shampoos, on the other hand, remain the least effective option for stopping significant shedding, since their contact time with the scalp is simply too short.

  • Minoxidil Cooper 5%: a concentrated 5% topical lotion that limits shedding by maximising the growth phase and encourages regrowth, particularly on recently lost hair. The glycerin it contains helps minimise irritation.
  • Currentbody LED helmet: used for 10 minutes a day, it harnesses red light therapy to stimulate follicular activity and improve hair thickness, according to Dr Gould.
  • Hairburst 0.25mm dermaroller: its 540 micro-needles create microchannels that improve the penetration of topical products, boost blood circulation and stimulate collagen production to regenerate the scalp.
  • Novexpert Strong Hair supplement: dermatologically tested, it combines saw palmetto extract standardised to 45% fatty acids to block DHT, grape seed extract to counter oxidative stress, and a blend of vitamins and minerals to address deficiencies.
  • Kérastase Extentioniste serum: formulated with creatine, ceramides and taurine, it nourishes the scalp and strengthens the hair fibre, making it particularly useful when loss is linked to poor hair habits.

Shampoo and dermaroller: allies you need to use correctly

The R+Co Dallas Shampoo deserves a special mention for thinning hair. Its formula combines vitamin B+, saw palmetto and coconut oil to hydrate, thicken and block DHT. It does not directly stimulate hair growth, but regular use delivers a noticeably fuller, healthier-looking head of hair.

To get the most out of minoxidil, the Hairburst dermaroller should be used 24 hours before applying the lotion, on a clean, dry scalp. By creating microchannels in the scalp, it allows the product to penetrate more easily and amplifies the results. It is therefore a combination well worth considering if you are opting for a topical treatment.

What experts actually recommend in 2026

Dr Khalifian is clear that the goal is to understand what genuinely stimulates regrowth, as opposed to products that simply tingle the scalp to give the impression of doing something. Products containing clinically proven ingredients can be effective, especially when they are part of a treatment that is consistent with the identified cause.

Patience remains the one non-negotiable condition for any result. Hair growth follows biological cycles that cannot be sped up on demand. Doing your own research on ingredients, checking formulation lists and consulting a healthcare professional are the three habits that make the difference between a worthwhile purchase and a waste of money.
