Paris in May: the best free outings to discover between exhibitions, museums and festivals

ParisSelect - Paris en mai : les meilleures sorties gratuites à découvrir entre expos, musées et fêtes

The month of May is upon us, with its share of public holidays and fine weather. Yet making the most of this free time without breaking the bank can seem complicated. Good news: there’s no shortage of free outings in Paris this month. Exhibitions, sporting events, popular festivals… here’s our selection of ways to experience the capital without spending a cent.

Art and culture: unmissable events

Art lovers are in for a treat this May. A number of events are opening their doors free of charge. You’ll be able to learn new practices or simply admire the work of passionate artists.

On Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31, over 60 artists welcome you to their studios in the Paris region. This Seine loop art trail features painting, sculpture, photography, engraving, glassmaking, embroidery and metalwork. The aim is simple: to demystify art and show how it really works.

In addition, European Museum Night takes place on May 23. Many Paris museums will open their doors free of charge until midnight. Themed guided tours and concerts will enhance the evening.

“Whether it’s for sport, culture or simple curiosity, you’re bound to have a good reason to take advantage of these free outings in Paris.”

Opera for all

From May 8 to 10, the “Tous à l’opéra” event puts young people in the spotlight. You can visit the Opéra Garnier, take a dance class at the Opéra-Comique or attend performances at the Opéra Bastille. This initiative helps to make the art form more accessible.

What’s more, this 2026 edition offers a variety of activities for all ages. Perhaps opera will become fashionable again after this experience? In any case, it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

  • Parcours d’art de la boucle de Seine: May 30-31
  • European Museum Night: May 23
  • All to the opera: May 8-10
  • Cathedral Night at Notre-Dame: May 9
  • Bread Festival on the square in front of Notre-Dame: May 8-17

Notre-Dame at the heart of the festivities

The parvis de Notre-Dame becomes a central location for free events in Paris in May. Two major events take place there in quick succession. Firstly, the Nuit des cathédrales (Cathedral Night) on May 9 gives visitors the chance to rediscover the monument by night.

The program for the evening includes a guided tour of the exterior, a time of prayer, a vigil with actress Brigitte Fossey and a guided tour of the interior. No need to book, just turn up at the entrance. This is a unique opportunity to admire the building after the work has been completed.

Then, from May 8 to 17, the Fête du Pain takes place on the same square. For 10 days, professional bakeries, demonstrations, tastings and entertainment punctuate the event. On May 15, 16 and 17, the “Meilleurs ouvriers de France” (Best Craftsmen of France) will be making exceptional live creations.

This festival is the world’s biggest celebration of bread. Every year, it attracts curious onlookers who come to taste and learn the secrets of this baking art.

Photography and commitment

Yann Arthus-Bertrand ‘s “Vivre ensemble” exhibition is on show at Place de la Concorde until May 10. The photographer, reporter, film-maker and activist is presenting his work. A photo studio also allows visitors to take part in the exhibition.

Events such as stand-up comedy, musical performances and yoga accompany the installation. It’s an original way to enjoy free outings in Paris, and a great way to learn something new at the same time.

Sport and dance for free

Sports enthusiasts will also find plenty to do among these free activities. On the last weekend of May, the French national monuments are getting into motion with “Les monuments en (pleine) forme”. For this second edition, hundreds of sporting events will take place in 34 monuments across France.

In the Paris region, you can run 5 km in the grounds of the Château de Vincennes. You can practice fencing at the Conciergerie or hike in the Champs-sur-Marne estate. These free outings in Paris and Ile-de-France combine heritage and physical activity.

On May 23, head to Pantin for the 1 km of dance along the Ourcq canal. This event, organized by the Centre national de danse, features hip-hop, Indian dance, Zumba and classical dance. From 2 p.m. to midnight, the banks of the canal come alive between the CND and La Pointe.

This remains one of the most festive events of the month. Whether you’re an amateur or an experienced dancer, everyone can join in and dance to their heart’s content.

Tribute to Sebastião Salgado

TheHôtel de Ville is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado until May 30. Salgado lived in Paris for a time, fleeing his country’s military dictatorship. His black-and-white images depict the human condition and nature in its raw state.

These include images of workers, inequality and migration. The sincerity of his committed work is touching. This exhibition is one of the free Paris outings not to be missed this month.
