A perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and a top rating on IMDb: among all of Harlan Coben’s adaptations on Netflix, one series stands head and shoulders above the rest in the eyes of critics. And yet, far too few viewers have actually seen it.

Innocent, the Spanish series that breaks every record for the author

Of the 13 Harlan Coben adaptations available on Netflix, only one achieves a perfect score across both major review platforms. That series is Innocent, a Spanish thriller spanning 8 episodes, filmed in Catalonia. Spanish director Oriol Paulo helms the adaptation, giving the story a distinctly Mediterranean feel that is worlds away from its original New Jersey setting.

The source novel, published in the United States in 2005 and widely read in France from 2006 onwards, is indeed set in New Jersey, as is typical of many of the author’s stories. Netflix made the bold decision to relocate the action to Spain while preserving the essence of the book, a gamble that appears to have paid off handsomely, judging by the response from both audiences and critics.

It is worth acknowledging a reality of the series market: British and American productions naturally dominate global rankings, while foreign-language adaptations often struggle to achieve the same level of visibility. Yet Innocent bucks that trend in spectacular fashion, earning the highest ratings of any series in the Harlan Coben universe.

What the series is actually about

The story centres on a character named Mateo Vidal, a man who accidentally killed someone. Nine years after that fateful event, he is trying to rebuild his life: he falls in love, rediscovers a sense of freedom, and seems to finally be getting back on his feet. Then a single phone call changes everything.

That seemingly simple premise unfolds into a cascade of twists and murders. This tension between a painful past and a threatening present is precisely the hallmark of Harlan Coben’s storytelling. The series exploits that dynamic with a precision audiences have widely praised, though to say much more would risk giving the game away.

What viewers are saying

On Allociné, Innocent holds 4 stars out of 5, a rating the platform rarely awards to Netflix series. Viewer comments are particularly enthusiastic. Some describe it as a razor-sharp thriller with a dark, twisted atmosphere that hooks you from the very first episode. Others note that the tension never lets up, right through to the final frame.

One viewer goes so far as to call Innocent the best plot ever seen on Netflix since the platform launched. That kind of spontaneous, unprompted reaction speaks volumes about the series’ real impact on those who have watched it.

Harlan Coben and Netflix: a partnership that goes beyond audience numbers

Netflix releases one or two Harlan Coben adaptations per year. At times, the platform goes further and develops series directly with the author, without drawing on an existing novel. These projects consistently pull in huge audiences. No Longer Alone, for instance, remained in the Netflix top rankings for more than 6 weeks after its release in France, and is among the contenders for the most-watched series of the year.

Yet popularity and quality do not always go hand in hand. No Longer Alone received mixed reviews: some viewers found the story overly convoluted, while others felt the ending was predictable or unconvincing. That is precisely where the distinction between audience success and critical success becomes meaningful. Innocent manages both, even if its visibility remains lower than that of English-language productions. For Harlan Coben fans in search of a series that is both tightly crafted and universally acclaimed, this Spanish thriller deserves a spot at the very top of the watchlist.
