Noticed your first fine lines or a slight loss of firmness? It doesn’t have to be inevitable: certain skincare ingredients, backed by dermatologists, can genuinely support collagen production and slow the visible effects of time on your skin.

Why does collagen start declining so early?

According to dermatologist Morgan Rabach, natural collagen production begins to drop as early as your mid-twenties. The process accelerates under the influence of external factors such as pollution, sun exposure, inflammation, stress and lack of sleep. The result: skin gradually loses firmness, hydration and thickness, and the first wrinkles begin to appear.

Dermatologist Hadley King explains that certain topical ingredients work by protecting existing fibres and creating a favourable environment for them to function properly. They can reduce the breakdown caused by free radicals, improve the skin barrier and support the skin’s repair processes. For skin that hasn’t yet experienced severe sagging, topical treatments are therefore the first line of defence.

Barrier and hydrating ingredients to preserve skin structure

Hyaluronic acid is often the first ingredient cited for its unmatched hydrating power. According to Hadley King, it hydrates and plumps the skin, creating a healthier environment for support fibres to work as they should. A treatment rich in hyaluronic acid, combined with antioxidants and peptides, delivers an optimal plumping effect.

Ceramides play a complementary role by reinforcing the skin barrier. Hadley King points out that they help soothe chronic irritation, which accelerates collagen breakdown. Nourishing ceramide-based creams help maintain the skin’s hydration levels while protecting it from external aggressors.

Niacinamide, meanwhile, is described by nurse Kevin Lamont Bachar as one of his favourite ingredients for its versatility. It stimulates dermal fibroblasts to increase collagen production, reduces inflammation, improves hydration and fades hyperpigmentation. It is also well tolerated by the vast majority of skin types.

Active ingredients that directly stimulate collagen synthesis

Vitamin C ranks among the most effective antioxidants for defending skin against UV rays, pollution and other environmental aggressors. Kevin Lamont Bachar explains that it acts as a cofactor for the enzymes responsible for stabilising and cross-linking collagen fibres. Without it, the body simply cannot form this support tissue correctly.

Retinoids are equally essential. Morgan Rabach notes that they stimulate collagen production, accelerate cell turnover and increase skin thickness over time. They also reduce the activity of the enzymes that degrade this tissue over the years. Prescription options such as tretinoin or tazarotene are available, but over-the-counter forms like retinol or adapalene are also recommended. One caveat: retinoids can cause redness, irritation and increased sun sensitivity.

For sensitive skin, bakuchiol, a plant-derived ingredient, offers benefits similar to retinoids, including increased collagen production and smoother fine lines, but without the irritating side effects. Dermatologist Marisa Garshick recommends pairing it with nourishing ingredients for a gentle yet effective result on all skin types.

Sun exposure: collagen’s number one enemy

UV exposure dramatically accelerates collagen breakdown by increasing oxidative stress and activating enzymes that actively destroy fibres. Kevin Lamont Bachar states that daily sun protection is one of the most effective steps you can take to preserve this tissue over the long term. Applying an SPF 46 or 50 every morning is therefore a direct investment in your skin’s health.

AHAs, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, complement this approach by stimulating fibroblasts to rebuild collagen and encouraging cell turnover. Marisa Garshick cautions, however, that over-exfoliating can weaken the skin barrier. She recommends limiting their use to once or twice a week to avoid any irritation.

Peptides and PDRN: the regenerating actives worth knowing

Peptides, and copper peptides in particular, are valuable allies for supporting and stimulating collagen production. Hadley King highlights their role in wound healing and skin tissue renewal. Growth factors, proteins naturally present in the body, work by signalling collagen production and encouraging its renewal.

PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, is one of the most talked-about regenerating ingredients of 2026. Long used in injectable treatments, it is now appearing in topical skincare. It reduces inflammation and supports collagen production. Marisa Garshick notes that further research is still needed to fully measure its effects when applied to the skin, but it is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types.
