The sun has finally returned to the capital, and with it the desire to enjoy the fine weather. In the south-west of Paris, a park of over 60,000 m² offers one of the finest views of the City of Light. Head to Meudon for a nature getaway just a few minutes from the city center.

An estate steeped in history at the gateway to Paris

Île-de-France is bursting with spectacular green spaces. Some require a long Transilien train journey, while others are easily accessible. Such is the case of the Parc de l’Observatoire de Meudon, an exceptional estate that offers the chance to get away from it all while enjoying the scenery.

This site has lived a thousand lives over the centuries. First a royal castle, then an astronomical observatory, it now boasts a park with breathtaking views. In 1655, the Superintendent of Finances purchased the property. Faced with a lack of green space, he hired Le Nôtre, gardener at Versailles, to create a terraced area worthy of the name.

Later, in 1876, after the château burned down, Jules Janssen founded an observatory on the site. This French astronomer wanted to develop astrophysics, a completely new discipline at the time. The estate thus took on a new scientific dimension.

“As for the park, it’s still intact and offers a unique stroll.

Vestiges of a royal and scientific past

The site became part of the Paris Observatory in 1927. Star studies are no longer actively pursued here. However, a solar tower in operation since 1969 still enables us to study the Sun’s movements.

A few vestiges of the château remain on the estate. It was once owned by Monseigneur, son of Louis XIV. The orangery, renovated a few years ago, still bears witness to this sumptuous era. The site is a remarkable blend of royal and scientific heritage.

A panoramic terrace overlooking Parisian monuments

This splendid hilltop terrace overlooks the town of Meudon. What’s more, it offers a breathtaking view of Paris and its iconic monuments. The Eiffel Tower, the Arche de La Défense and the Sacré-Coeur can all be seen from an unprecedented angle.

Far from crowded rooftops, this park extends over 6 hectares. As a result, visitors enjoy a generous space in which to recharge their batteries. This breath of fresh air is ideal for coping with the predicted scorching temperatures.
