Every summer, the same story plays out: some people come back from the beach with a golden tan after just a few days, while others deal with sun damage in the form of redness and irritated skin. Genetics certainly plays a part, but researchers have found that one beloved seasonal fruit could help the skin defend itself more effectively against solar aggression.

Mango: an unexpected ally against sun damage

Mango is far more than a sweet summer treat. The fruit contains beta-carotene, a pigment the body converts into vitamin A, along with vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds. These elements belong to a large family of pigments called carotenoids, responsible for the orange, yellow and red hues found in many fruits and vegetables.

What makes these pigments particularly interesting is how they behave inside the body. When consumed regularly, they are not simply flushed out after digestion. A portion accumulates in the skin, where they act as antioxidants. In practical terms, they help limit the oxidative stress caused by UV rays, a process directly linked to premature skin ageing and the damage caused by excessive sun exposure.

Adding mango to a varied diet therefore helps boost carotenoid intake. And let’s be honest, biting into a perfectly ripe mango is a far more enjoyable experience than swallowing a capsule.

What science says about photoprotection through carotenoids

A study published in 2020 set out to measure this effect rigorously. Over twelve weeks, 60 adults took part in a double-blind protocol: one group received a carotenoid-rich supplement, the other a placebo, with participants unaware of which group they were in.

The researchers tracked two key indicators. First, the concentration of carotenoids in participants’ skin. Second, their skin’s reaction to UVB rays, which cause sunburn, and UVA rays, which are involved in tanning but also in skin ageing.

  • Participants who received carotenoids showed higher concentrations of these pigments in their skin.
  • Their skin was more resistant to UVB rays compared to the placebo group.
  • The response to UVA rays also appeared improved, with more even pigmentation.
  • Carotenoids do not prevent UV rays from reaching the skin, but help the skin manage that assault more effectively.

In other words, the skin of those who took the supplement seemed better prepared to face the sun. The researchers describe this as a photoprotective effect, not a natural sunscreen. That distinction matters.

Limiting sun damage is no reason to skip sunscreen

It would be tempting to conclude that a diet rich in carotenoids is enough to stay protected. That would be a mistake. Dermatologists are unequivocal on this point: even with high carotenoid intake, sunscreen remains essential.

The smart summer habits haven’t changed. You still need to apply appropriate sun protection, avoid the hours when the sun is at its most intense, and cover your skin with a hat or clothing whenever possible. Carotenoids are a complement to these habits, not a substitute for them.

Sun damage to the skin results from a combination of factors. The oxidative stress generated by UV rays is one of the central mechanisms. Reducing that stress through dietary antioxidants can therefore contribute to preserving the skin over the long term, provided you don’t let your other protections slip. Eating mango this summer is a great idea, but it’s no excuse to leave the sunscreen at the bottom of your bag.
