For several days, the Princess and Prince William had been keeping a low profile. Settled at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, the Wales family had stepped back from official engagements to enjoy quality time together. The project was launched in 2021 by photographer and activist Cindy Sasha, with the aim of giving children from Mitcham, many of them from disadvantaged backgrounds, hands-on training in photography.
Beyond the technical skills, however, the programme has a deeper ambition. It is about building confidence in young people, nurturing their creativity and helping them find their own voice. By choosing to highlight the club on World Photography Day, the Princess gave these children a rare and invaluable moment in the spotlight.

A passion for photography that goes back to her university years

A graduate in art history from the University of St Andrews, she devoted her dissertation to Lewis Carroll’s photographs of children.
That passion has never faded. In 2019, Queen Elizabeth II appointed her patron of the Royal Photographic Society, a role the late sovereign had herself held for 67 years, a significant gesture that speaks to the recognition this commitment has earned within the royal family.

Alongside her patronage of the Royal Photographic Society, the Princess holds roles with other major cultural institutions. She is involved with both the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
